Course overview essay: Writing & Research Process English 102 have opened a new point of view in my mind. I discovered how to do research in a different language and realized that my brain was covered with dust, this is the first time after 5 years that I’m a former student and trying to get a second degree. Before I registered this class, I looked up a website called “Grade your Teacher” and the comments about the instructor were positive, so I decided to take it. At the beginning of this class (back to September 23rd) and after receiving a 0.0 as a grade for my first essay, I knew this was going to be hard, and I had no idea about how I was going to pass this research course. One of the first concepts that I learned was “marginalia” which –according to the teacher’s explanation- means to take random notes about something to think later. As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. There was usually only one major writing assignment each year, which was a research paper on a topic that was given by our teachers. Although there was some writing involved in these classes, most of the class time was spent on improving my reading and comprehension skills. A small part of the class was given to improve my skills as a writer and even a researcher. In English 101, however, most of the class time was spent on writing and more specifically, academic writing. This includes doing proper research, picking a worthy topic to write about, correctly analyzing sources, and developing a well-rounded, complete paper. I have progressed a writer over the semester by effectively integrating and analyzing sources better, and being more specific with my words.
English 102 demands my full attention as much as humanly possible. From the first day I walked into your classroom this semester, I knew I was going to be pushed to produce the work I know I am capable of generating. Although I felt English 102 was going to be a challenge, I felt I had a major advantage over the rest of the peers in our class. The advantage undoubtedly being that I had the same professor the foregoing semester. By choosing a professor whom I felt comfortable writing for, as well as an increased comfort level with your familiar teaching style and grading scheme, I felt I would have the easiest transition into your classroom. Instead of taking a different English 102 class with a new professor who would take half of the semester to learn my name, let alone my writing style, I was confident that you would be able to pick up on my weaknesses and help me exploit my strengths as a writer. For instance, last semester you helped me to spot my ongoing weaknesses in my writing style such excessive run-on sentences, proper grammar and the use of appropriate punctuation where necessary. I knew these weaknesses were going to be a challenge in that I saw them as “carryover” problems from year to year in my schooling. You also have helped me to realize what strengths I possess and, in turn, carryover from year to year as well. For instance, the confidence in my ability to summarize and synthesize material from varied sources as well as my ability to write creatively have all given me the self-assurance I need to write with meaning and purpose.
Overall, English 102 was much harder than English 101 because the essays were not analyzing a topic once and forgetting about it. Writing about the same thing multiple times is challenging when you use all your good ideas in the first few papers. The ideas and subject matter that make up English 102 is in no way hard; however, it was very difficult to write the papers that are required in the class. Nevertheless, I think I would retake the class because it did help me learn how to write in new genres and use new writing techniques.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. In the beginning of this semester, English 1302 seemed as though it would be the subject that would be the toughest for me to pass. The pace, the work load and everything in between seemed overwhelming for me. As time proceeded to pass, the course didn’t seem as overpowering. By taking the work one step at a time, it simply became another step to achieve the overall goal of this first half of the semester. I have made improvements as well as learned lessons from my mistakes made along the way.
Writing this evaluative essay is both beneficial to the teacher and the TCC English Department. The professor because she had given us a chance to critique her and tell her, her strengths and weakness of her teaching; it favored the English department because they now know how effective the textbook is and how effective this class is to the students actually taking it. Because I had a teacher who was willing to help when in need, English 111 wasn’t as hard as others portrayed it to be. I had a good professor, peers, and the writing center to help me with this class. I hope to continue to be successful in the second part of the course. Although I do not enjoy writing essays this is an essay I enjoyed writing.
Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
The Purpose of Freshman Seminar course is to prepare incoming freshman for the next four years they are going to spend in college by offering tips on and how to succeed in your four years. I set goals for myself a long time ago. At this point in my life I believe that I should be fulfilling my goals I set. When I was young and naïve I made some bad decision and for that I have to take the long and hard route to success instead of taking the easy short route like I planned. The reason why success is so important to me is because I want to succeed in life more than anything and become something in life so bad and not be a loser with no life.
he Spring Quarter is almost over! With this in mind, I am writing you a letter to reflect on my experiences in English 102 section HY1. Having previously completed The University of Washington Composition 131 class at the high school, I found multiple connections between the classes. Both classes focused on time management and self-improvement. The major difference, and the thing I really struggled with, was there was only one peer review. In my previous class, we had an extremely longer amount of time to revise our papers and typically had two or three drafts. Nevertheless, traditional schools offer students with a plethora of enrichment activities and allow them to participate in extracurricular activities. Students are able to recognize their skills and talents through clubs, sports, and variety of community outreach programs while homeschool students only concentrate on academics. It is an important factor in a child’s development as it promotes competition which is critical as it motivates the student to continually try to improve themselves while homeschool students are isolated (Debate.org, 2017). At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions.
