I believe that I should be awarded the Courage to Grow Scholarship because of the impact it could have on my life. As a student pursuing a higher education I have set goals for myself and I believe that this scholarship will bring me one step closer to achieving them. As a child I did not know a lot about college. None of the adults in my life had been to College, my family did not talk about it, and it seemed like a distant land that I heard about only in movies and on Television. I was first introduced to college when my third grade class took a field trip to Iowa State University, clearly a much needed field trip considering my lack of exposure to higher education. I was immediately amazed by the grand architecture and massive buildings. I had never seen anything like a University campus before. The few things that I remember about the trip were that everything was big, the college students played with us, and we got to swim in the pool. While the larger purpose of the field trip may have been lost to my childhood excitement of getting to swim in a big pool, the field trip did mark the beginning of my knowledge of higher education and from then on I always viewed it as something that I would be a part of eventually, even if it did seem like a very distant future at age eight. A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. As a young lady graduating from The Dalles Whatonka High School I think it’s important to be involved in as many activity’s as possible. Throughout my high school years I have been involved in many school activities and comities such as student government. I have always had an interest in athletics and played sports. These leadership and athletic roles have tough me skills that will last me a lifetime.
Scholarship is very fundamental, it requires a lot of ambition and a desire to learn in order to accomplish important goals. In a world where most college freshmen do not graduate or dropout, i feel like it would mean to much more to me to graduate and be able to say I got my degree. studies have said that half of freshman will not complete there degree, another study said that 25% of freshmen will change their major before they finish their sophomore year. If i was given this scholarship money it would put me in a place where hopefully I won't become just another statistic. Another reason a college degree is important for me to achieve is so that i will be respected in my work industry of choice. I have tried my best all throughout high school and have taken challenging courses such as Calculus and Physics 2. I love a challenge and figuring how to complete one. No matter what the challenge is I will try my best to complete it. In classes such as Calculus or Chemistry, if a problem in class stumps me, I will bring it home just to figure it out and prove to myself I can do it. I do this even if it is not homework. I hope going to college will give me different challenges so I can prove that I am even more hard-working individual and this scholarship will help me get there. I choose to challenge myself by taking honors and AP classes. I can overcome obstacles that stand in my way and persevere through tough problems. My passion for public service initiated in my third grade reading class. It was there that I volunteered for “Reading Together USA”, a program to help younger children learn to read. The joy and delight that I felt from witnessing my students’ progress was unprecedented to any feeling that I ever felt before, and I knew from that point forward that my life would be committed to serving the public. Although my forms (TRYING TO SAY WAYS LIKE 1st pre-med then law) of serving others may have changed, the trend of service has remained constant through high school, college, and even my career.
“Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work” –Thomas Edison. I have had to struggle to get where I am today, and there have been times that I thought I would not make it to my senior year of high school. My life would almost replicate the location of a natural disaster to some. I broke my arm this past October and had to undergo reconstructive surgery, everything academics wise fell out from under my feet. After having surgery on my arm I repeatedly missed school for occupational therapy, which is a form of physical therapy. On top of my arm, I had just gotten my job back at Arby’s. By November I was working anywhere from 20-35 hours a week with school, a broken arm, and OT. I had no time for anything, not even sleep. When I was at school I could barely keep my eyes open, it eventually got to the point that when I was able to attend a full day of school I would sleep during some of my classes so that I would not fall asleep at work that night. I have worked harder in this last year just to make it through, than I have in the last four years to keep my grades up. I work every night now, and my arm is a little more healed than it was when I first started my job, but I still have limitations as to what I can do as a human being. Throughout this essay I will cover these three major points; the most important thing that I have learned in high school, why the scholarship will make a difference in my educational goals, and how I hope to make a difference in the community with my career.
First off, I would like to say again, thank you for nominating me as a possible recipient for this scholarship. I do not think I have ever been recognized for my academic achievements throughout my entire school career. I never was really focused and determined to learn before like I am now. So just the nomination is an honor, no matter if I receive the scholarship or not. Thank you for the recognition. It truly made my day.
I always have gave someone a hand when they needed it most. I love helping everyone I can. I have set goals for myself in the future for my education and my career. I have a plan to make sure I achieve my goals, I want to major in Nursing. I have selected this major because I want to help people when they are at their worst, to get better. I love helping people and making them feel better. This major will help me achieve my goal because I want to go as far as I can with my education and I want to become a Registered Nurse. My plans are to work in a pediatric doctors office or, hospital. Getting this scholarship will help me to focus more on school instead of my job to pay off school.
I learned that life is going to throw you challenges and will attempt to set us back from our goals. Anybody can achieve any goal they set their minds to with hard work and determination. With my learning disability, I worked harder than those who were not limited in their strengths, but this turned out to be my ultimate strength. Working hard will only help you achieve in life. I view effort and trying as keys to success. I am a student diagnosed with a learning disability associated with my written expression, writing to your foundation because I never let a setback stop me from achieving my goals. I believe that I have an extraordinary message for others. I feel if I were the recipient for your scholarship it would definitely push me significantly closer to my goals coming from a son of a hard working single mother that I wish to give back what she has given
My journey as a student has always been focused on the path to college and success. Before I even set foot in kindergarten my mother, a college dropout, always told me that “honor roll wasn’t an option” and that I would be attending college in the future and achieving a degree. Most of the time I made these requirements. Most of the time I was awarded honor roll or had a newly edited list of colleges to attend, but sometimes life got in the way of my dreams of achieving success.
