Muhammad Ali states, “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life”. What Ali is saying is, to be able to grow as a person, being courageous and taking different risks is vital to achieve different goals in life. In today’s society, people need to be more courageous so that they can grow to be better. The word “courage” comes from the Latin root “cor” which means heart. The definition of this word now and what the definition was back then have two completely different meanings. What it meant when the word originally came about meant to speak from the heart; while the word now correlates with gallant or brave. I like to describe them as “loud” and “quiet” courage. People today do perform courageous acts on a daily basis but how they do them really proves who they are. Loud courage is when someone only does something courageous for personal gain, they do these things only when others are watching so that they can receive praise. Quiet courage is the opposite of that; when a person acts solely on their intention to do good and benefit others. That is the type of courage that we need today. Although these are forms of courage, there is much more to the word. Courage can be kindness, taking the lead, voicing an opinion, really anything that may be difficult or challenging to do. Every now and then a person is faced with a challenge or a complicated problem that they are fearful of and can even harm them either emotionally or physically, but a true man or woman that has courage will overcome this obstacle to pursue their inhibitions. Just like in the movie The Wizard of Oz, the lion is supposed to be the king of the jungle but is easily scared of every little thing that comes his way even though it would just be a tree or his shadow. At the end of the movie, when they find out the Wizard is a fraud, he realizes that he was courageous the whole time because of everything he did to get to the Emerald City. The harsh conditions they had to face to stick up for what they believe in were terrible. Although we still see some of it today, in Jesus’ time, the mass murdering and persecutions were ever more prevalent. In Psalm 21:1 of the Bible, it states that “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?”. Even though people were literally going to be killed for their Christianity faith, these people had the courage to accept their fate and trust in the Lord to save them. In most cases, like stated before, this would be something very challenging to face up to and they had to be fearful knowing their lives were on the line.
