Courage by definition is “the ability to control your fear in a difficult or dangerous situation, it is a state of quality of mind and spirit that enables one to face danger, fear or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, resolution and bravery, (Word Dictionary). In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, the two character’s courage Hamlet’s and Claudius’s is compared, the hero of the tragedy is the character Hamlet, he is considered a literary hero because he displays feats of nobility along with courage. Again, Hamlet's courage is obviously greater than Horatio's. This makes Hamlet a bigger man than Horatio. Horatio is brave man, but Hamlet's bravery dominates and distinguishes him from Horatio. Through these examples it is clear that Hamlet's courage outweighs any other character. Another aspect of Hamlet, which marks him the hero of this tragedy is his nobility.

Before his father's death, Hamlet was a very intelligent man, cultured and sophisticated. But one of his mistakes was his lack of maturity to deal with death. After his father's death, he has changed, but he is still noble in essence. He is noble enough to give Claudius the benefit of the doubt even after the ghost has revealed the truth to him.

This is shown by the fact that he is willing to wait a few months until he can "catch the king's conscience"; (II., 559) through the use of the mouse trap scene.
