In the eighteen hundred, many Americans desired to determine the outcome of political conflicts via compromise. However, this did not seem possible in the mid-nineteenth century. Throughout both the north and the south, people had different ideas on how these disputes should be settled, thus causing the Civil War. In 1828, President Andrew Jackson issued the Tariff of 1828, also known as the Tariff of Abominations. Responding to this new tax on imported goods, South Carolina’s vice president, John C.
