The books The Crucible, Young Goodman Brown, and Life of Pi all show different aspects of courage in their stories. When we have courage or set our hearts to things we want to accomplish, we will succeed in the endeavor. In Life of Pi there is amazing almost unrealistic courage shown in many different ways. Pisicine Patel started out as a normal young boy who lives in India, mid-1970s. He goes to school, he’s bullied, and works just as the rest of us. “The Crucible” and “Young Goodman Brown”, are both examples of societies that are trying to create perfection and become a “city on a hill”. Both of these cities are both created in a way, where everyone and everything has to be perfect. Both of these cities set an example for other cities around them in such a way, that it shows their achievements and success that they have created in a perfect city. In both, “The Crucible” and Young Goodman Brown”, the main characters true goal in life, is to have a perfect world. The stories “The Crucible” and “Young Goodman Brown”, are prime example of how being “a city on a hill” is impossible because of people lying and people sinning against their religion.
Mark Twain best described courage when he said that, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear” (Twain). Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. Everyone is born with some form of courage. The question is, in their lifetime, will they choose to use it and grow from it? People can be courageous in many different situations and through multiple types of courage. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, values standing up for what is right as being the most important category of courage. Harper Lee displays acts of courage through the characters when Atticus defends Tom Robinson, Scout and Jem choose not to show their anger through violence, and town’s people stand up for Tom and Atticus; thus showing that the author believes that standing up for what is right is the most valuable attribute of courage.
To be courageous you cannot be deterred by possible outcomes that may involve danger or pain. To be courageous you have to be more than brave you have to be undaunted and have a heart of a lion. Through Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird courage and determination are embedded through the character’s actions. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb County, explains to his son Jem, “I wanted him to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see if through no matter what.(Lee 149)” Through this quote Harper Lee is trying to convey that, real courage is more than appearance it is a significant action

We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Having courage helps people get through hard times in life. Staying hopeful and having the courage will help people get there a situation. Courage helps people stay hopeful and feel safe. Throughout “The Crucible” many characters showed several acts of courage. In the play, “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, John Proctor stands out as a courageous character in the story.
J.F Clarke said that "The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience". This statement means that the special people, who listen to their conscience, are the bravest because it is not easy to listen and act on what your conscience tells you because many people are afraid of the consequences of doing so. In The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, and Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the characters truly do show this trait of being brave. I agree with the statement because I know myself that it isn't easy to act on what your conscience tells you. Many times the consequences stop me and also it is very hard to base a decision on pure "instinct".
Courage is not something that we are born with, it is a skill that takes time to learn and only a few are lucky enough to have it. To Kill a Mockingbird is not only about life in a world full of hate, it is about standing up for anyone’s beliefs being brave enough to do it. In this story, Harper Lee says “Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 112). In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates courage through Atticus Finch, Mrs. Dubose, and Arthur Radley.
The highest level of courage is staying true to yourself. Being honest to yourself and standing up for what you believe in takes great courage. Unfortunately, being courageous comes at a high cost and you may not always be rewarded for it. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, many characters show courage at the topmost level. Their acts may seem foolish and immoral to others, but they do what they believe in. The book shows that true courage is fighting in what you believe no matter what the consequences. We see this type of courage in Jem, Scout, Atticus and even Boo Radley throughout the course of the book.
Without courageous people, human society would not progress. This is evident in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, whereby a few heroic individuals inspire transformations in a racist community. One of the characters who shows bravery is Tom Robinson. Even though he knows he will most likely lose, he goes on trial and fights for justice and truth. Another person who displays inner strength is Boo Radley. He is able to break out of his comfort zone and stand up for what is right, despite his fear. The most daring character in the novel is Atticus Finch. Although most of the town is against him, he continues onward and faces hatred with dignity and respect. Each of these extraordinary individuals represent Harper Lee’s belief that real courage is doing the right thing, even if it requires standing up against the majority.
Numerous people try to achieve the goal at living heroic lives. However, these lives are compared to unrealistic stories. These stories are build around the idea of courage shining out when facing fear. The idea of losing something unhinges us and brings out our true heroic self. To show courage a person has to have strength, commitment, and fear, as Galileo Galilei, Joan of Arc, and Jem from the book To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee all demonstrated.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. “All living things contain a measure of madness that moves them in strange, sometimes inexplicable ways. This madness can be saving; it is part and parcel of the ability to adapt. Inside every human being, there is an extremely primal and animalistic trait that can surface when the will to survive becomes greater than the morals of the person. This trait allows humans to overcome their fear to do things which they wouldn’t normally be able to do in order to survive when they’re in extreme peril and in a do or die situation. Throughout the book, Life of Pi, survival is a dominant and central theme. The will to survive changes people and this includes the main character of the story, Piscine Molitor Patel. Survival will even change the most timid, religious, and law-abiding people. Yann Martel, using Pi as an example, tries to explain that all humans must do three things in order to survive a life threatening event: one must give up their morals, one must find a way to keep sane, and one must be ready to compromise and sacrifice.
