“The Crucible” and “Young Goodman Brown”, are both examples of societies that are trying to create perfection and become a “city on a hill”. Both of these cities are both created in a way, where everyone and everything has to be perfect. Both of these cities set an example for other cities around them in such a way, that it shows their achievements and success that they have created in a perfect city. In both, “The Crucible” and Young Goodman Brown”, the main characters true goal in life, is to have a perfect world. The stories “The Crucible” and “Young Goodman Brown”, are prime example of how being “a city on a hill” is impossible because of people lying and people sinning against their religion. We see this in “The Crucible”, when Abigail and her friends are caught preforming a witchcraft like dance in the forest. At this time, they are in the town of Salem which is a very religious town in which, they all obey and follow the rules of god in order to keep order and perfection in the town, hence “ a city on a hill” because everyone around them views this town as a perfect place to live. This all changes when he is faced with evil and sin for the first time. Much lie “The Crucible”, the story’s climax is when the man goes into the woods to witness and join in a satanic dance much like Abigail did in “The Crucible”. What this man doesn't realize, is that many people from his town are there too, in which he is stunned by seeing so many people who lived in a “perfect” town commit a sin. By seeing so many people in the forest, committing a sin, the man realizes that no-one is perfect. Both of these stories demonstrate that people are not perfect and will never be.
