The human mind is a strange place -- it can be filled with dark, twisted thoughts, ones shamed by society, or good, kind thoughts, ones praised by society. All of these different thoughts affect a person’s actions, their life, and, ultimately, how they are seen by the others around them. What a person believes in is what makes them human. They could be a criminal, or a businessman, but they have emotions and standards that they hold themselves to every day -- their code of ethics. My code of ethics, to some, is quite complex, with the main emphasis being on honesty, deceit, individuality, curiosity, and benevolence. I have been known to experiment with many things, both physically and mentally. Two summers ago, at a performance arts camp, I joined a band and learned how to play drums. This past summer, I joined another band and learned how to play the bass. I love music, and making it is fun and comes naturally to me. I also love singing, too. Along with music, I experiment with pronouns, sexuality, book and movie genres, friends, food, and many other things, for lack of a better term. If it is not clear, I also highly value individuality and diversity. If everyone looked and acted the same, life would become very boring. I believe that this is due to the teachings of my mother, whose favorite phrase is ‘everything happens for a reason’. To put it simply, this phrase means that everything, whether it was good or bad, will result in something good happening. This thinking has helped me overcome many different situations and not get mad. The Golden Rule (treat others the way you want to be treated) is important to me. I also try to be kind to everyone because it makes both them, and me, feel good. Like the pawn shop owner in one of the scenarios, I would have had a difficult time deciding on whether to tell my cousin about the painting’s actual worth. Do I help myself, or help him? If I were in that situation, I believe I would have bought it for 5,000 dollars so my cousin would not have to pay the full price, but still pay more than 50
