Code of Ethics As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality and justice. I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and to be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed both in my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I hear or see of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty. I will never act officiously or let personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law cautiously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employ unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities. I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. The messaging in both the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and Canada’s Health Informatics Association (COACH) Code of Ethics are very similar. They both discuss prioritizing privacy and security, set an expectation of maintaining a professional and collegial work ethic, encourage the continuing of education and building of one's knowledge base and both refer to a focus on the awareness of future developments/advancements within the industry. My initial preference was the CHIMA Code of Ethics as I preferred the phrasing and third person approach, however, upon further review I noticed that CHIMA’s used the word ‘strive’ instead of COACH’s approach of ‘I will’. This to me seems to have less impact then the COACH counterpart.

My personal code of ethics act as a foundation for distinguishing good from bad deeds and assists me to determine the rightful emotions and actions to engage in. My family, friends, and the society play a major part in the development of my personal principles and values, including excellence, integrity, responsibility, ambition, respecting family, accountability, and determination. The values enable me to associate well with my family, colleagues, friends, and the society. This paper describes my personal code of ethics in detail and compares it to the United Nation’s (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the NASWA Code of Ethics.
A police officer’s duty is to protect and serve their community. They also hold high standards for themselves. I believe the most valuable trait a police officer holds is integrity. This must be maintained because they are in a position of trust. Police officers are also very professional in what they do.

When a problem occurs, everyone looks to the officer to "take charge," to "solve the problem." Some say the cop is never off duty. Even when the officer is not working there is a tendency to attack problems and take charge. Sometimes taking charge is not preferable, and can cause particular strains in our world where many people like to linger with problems, never really solving anything. Recognizing the difference between a "problem solving" situation, where action is desirable, and a more passive situation, where action may alienate others, is difficult for the cop.
I have chosen the business profession topic of higher education administration. I am extremely familiar with this profession; as it is the job that I currently hold. There is a plethora of different activities and task that are dealt with on a daily basis within this profession. Some of these items consist of assisting both full and part time staff and faculty, maintaining order within budgets and finance, including all purchase orders and check requests, facilitating student awards, including scholarships, staffing and training within the department, as well as dealing with public policy and laws within the college. It is immensely obvious that this job would keep anyone busy. This alone is one of the reasons I love this profession so much. Each day brings something new, and important group of items to accomplish. Anyone who holds this job, would go into work everyday knowing that the tasks that they are about to perform, will create a difference to not only to the departments and its students, but will also make a difference within the entire college. This person alone has the responsibility of making ethical decisions every single day as well as watching out for others who may need help being pointed in the proper ethical direction based on their knowledge of the school’s ethics plans that have been put in place. If someone were unaware of the ethical standards in this profession, there is a lot of room for things to head in a corrupt direction rather quickly.

Out of the four responsibilities of an American police officer, I would have to say that enforcing laws is the most important. Laws are very important, because they dictate what is acceptable and what is not within a given society. Police officers must uphold these laws to keep society in balance and the people within it safe. If police officers did not enforce laws, then society would be in utter chaos.
