Child slavery is an immense problem in today's world. According to the International Labor Organization 5.5 million children are victims of child slavery. 5.5 million children are being forced to work in horrible conditions that can cause serious health problems. 5.5 million children can't have an education. 5.5_ million children are being locked in small rooms without any social activities that children need. Child slavery is destroying are youth and affecting their mental health, physical health and causing children to go without an education. It most be stopped!

    To be black is to be naturally inferior; this was the mindset of the American South in the beginning of the 19th century. African Americans were confined to slavery with no means to change their situation or to escape the abuse that often accompanied their position. Slaves endured all forms of physical and mental punishment whose sole purpose was to keep them inferior to their white suppressors. Slaves were maintained through ignorance; they had their self-identity stolen from them and were kept illiterate to prevent them from questioning what power kept them oppressed and to prevent them from spreading word of the brutalities they faced. To be a slave meant to live a doomed life. Negros were not the only ones who were ruined by the institution of slavery, though. Frederick Douglass, an African American social reformer, leader of the abolitionist movement, and former slave, believed that the unnatural means of slavery had harmful effects on everyone within the institution of slavery. Although slaves faced physical, mental, and psychological abuse, slave owners were also degraded and ruined by the institution of slavery, because it distressed slaveholding families, caused warped forms of Christianity with unjust morals to arise, and reduced civil people to fiends through irresponsibility. Through his Narrative and his speeches, Douglass reasoned that if everyone within the institution of slavery was tarnished by it, then it must be unnatural, and therefore a threat to society as a whole that must be removed.

The story takes place in a not so distant future where today’s world no longer exists due to an unknown catastrophe.  The only human is a man who calls himself the Abominable Snowman or Snowman for short, but in his childhood days his name was Jimmy.  If the thought of being all alone in the world is not uneasy enough, Atwood takes this opportunity to point out the flaws of the modern world through Snowman’s reminiscing about Jimmy’s childhood.  The truths exposed are events that people do not want to acknowledge: animal abuse for human advancement, elimination of human interaction due to technology, and at the core of the novel is the disturbing imagery that slavery is still present.  Modern day servitude is an unsettling topic that has remained undercover for far too long.  However, the veracity is exposed in the traumatic story of Oryx.  In order to understand the troubled societies of today, Atwood unmasks the dark world of childhood bondage through the character Oryx, but she gives subtle insights on how to change the world for the better before it is too late.
