Douglas MacArthur was one of the most famous American Generals. He commanded troops in the Southwest Pacific during World War II (1939-1945). He also commanded the successful occupation of Japan after the war, and was in charge of the United Nations forces during the Korean War(“Douglas MacArthur Biography”). MacArthur was talented, outspoken, and in the eyes of many, egotistical. Douglas MacArthur was one of the most influential generals in United States history.
Douglas MacArthur was born on January 26th,1880 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born on a military base and into a family with a lot of military history. Arthur was a military captain when Douglas was born. Mary, Douglas’ mother lived in Virginia most of her life with her brothers. Mary’s brother’s were with the South during the Civil War. The base where Douglas was born is one of the first of several military bases that Douglas would live on during his childhood.
His family moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1893, Douglas went to West Texas Military Academy. He began to get better grades to be in the military. Douglas also was a member of several sports teams at his school. After high school, Douglas went to the Military Academy at West Point, where he excelled, and in 1903 he graduated with honors. Following graduation, MacArthur was recruited as a Junior officer in the Army Corps Of Engineers and spent many years fulfilling many duties.
Jean MacArthur(Faircloth) was Douglas MacArthur’s wife. She was born on December 28th, 1898 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her and Douglas got married in 1937 and remained married until 1964. They had a kid who they named after Douglas’ father, Arthur MacArthur IV. Jean died January 22, 2000 in Manhattan, New York City.

Douglas MacArthur died in Washington, D.C., on April 5, 1964. He was 84 years old. He was honored with a state funeral and was buried in the Douglas MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia. While he was often criticized for being full of himself, he led us to victory over the Japanese forces and changed the course of American history. Dwight Eisenhower had a significant impact on the U.S. Military as both an officer in the United States Army, as well as the president of the United States. As Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during WWII, General Eisenhower was the leader in charge of planning Operation Overlord or D-Day (Ambrose, 1983). This was a complex, large-scale operation that put many lives on the line. Sending thousands of military forces to storm the beaches of Normandy and face death was not an easy task. Operation Overlord was successful, and its success gained Eisenhower fame.
It is clear that the two generals did not care for each other before World War II even started, as they “rubbed each other the wrong way” when they first met while stationed at Fort Leavenworth together from 1908-1911. When Marshall became MacArthur’s superior, MacArthur would say, “My worst enemy has always been behind me.” The two had their quarrels from the time they met up until the end of World War I, which had been evident for many spectators to witness. However, both MacArthur and Marshall were able to put their hostility towards each other aside when they had to focus on the task at hand in order to help the American military progress. There were times in which General Marshall would encourage and support the decisions MacArthur made, and there were times in which Marshall would not support the actions of MacArthur during the course of World War II. First, I conducted research and found some interesting things about MacArthur that I did not know. MacArthur was the commander of Allied Forces in the Pacific during World War 2. His family had a firm military background. His father had been awarded for his service in the Union Army during the Civil War. MacArthur attended West Texas Military Academy and played several sports. After high school he enrolled in the Military Academy at West Point and graduated with honors. Clancy grew up with interests and intentions surrounding the military. He was born Thomas Leo Clancy, Jr. (“Tom” Web) on April 12, 1947 (Lansford 381) in Baltimore, Maryland (Byers 70). His parents both had occupations; his father was a mail carrier and his mother was a credit manager. Growing up, Clancy had a love for reading as he often read (“Tom” Web). General Douglas indeed wanted to help the American Armies during World War II by constantly promoting new ideas and strategies even though some of them were shut down. For example, in 1951 President Truman relieved MacArthur from his command as a General but still never gave up from helping the American Army. In the article, “Douglas MacArthur Biography General (1880–1964)” , it stated “ In 1952, MacArthur met with Dwight Eisenhower, who had just been elected president, and advised him on how to end the Korean War. His decidedly extreme strategy, which included the use of atomic weapons, was rejected.” This shows that although General Douglas was relieved from his position, he continued to think of new ways to defeat the Koreans and to help the American Army. For a united nation to prosper, its people must overcome obstacles and take on numerous responsibilities. Throughout our lives, there are problems occurring continually in our world related to war and combat. During these times of hardship, we must remind ourselves to persevere and continue to defend the country. In addressing the Sylvanus Thayer Award on May 12, 1962, at the city of West Point, New York, General Douglas MacArthur urged Americans to remember the major responsibilities we have as Americans in his speech Duty, Honor, Country. With a position of authority, MacArthur powerfully stated that America will only survive through winning wars and fulfilling our duties. His main priority was to defend the nation, respect the nation, and prosper in that vast nation, otherwise remarked as three key terms: duty, honor, and country. Through the use of rhetorical devices, MacArthur expresses the theme that Americans should defend the country sturdily and carry on its numerous objectives by means of his moral code: “Duty, Honor, Country”.

Grant fought in several wars, including the battle of Belmont, Fort Henry, battle of Shiloh, the battle of Vicksburg, and the battle of Chattanooga. In 1862, Grant had his first major victory when he captured Fort Donelson in Tennessee. Ulysses S. Grant was the general and commander of the majority of his battles. The hard work of Grant got him far through life and fame forever.
