Leadership is not a trait people are born with. Leaders are realized through their actions and influence. There has been many historical figures that has demonstrated leadership, and the change that has resulted from their actions can still be seen today. Similar to significant leaders in the past, there are many modern leaders today who inspire others and change the world around them. Bill Gates,co-founder of Microsoft, is a prime example of a modern leader. William Henry “Bill” Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Washington. During his school years, Gates developed an interest in coding and computer programming. This interest quickly turned into passion. At the age of 15, Gates developed a software program that would monitor traffic …show more content…
His actions within the company quickly defined him as a capable leader. Gates would personally review every single line of code before it was sold, and even rewriting the code himself occasionally. He would often go through sleepless nights to improve the software that his business developed. He made sure Microsoft kept evolving by pursuing partnerships with other businesses. His persistence finally paid off with Microsoft achieving a business contract with IBM. Microsoft’s success increased dramatically in later years, after the partnership with IBM. Revenue was $16 million between 1979 and 1980. In a short four years, and with only 25 employees, Gates has lead Microsoft to compete with big businesses and …show more content…
He is a leader because of what he represents. He is a symbol of advancement and success. Even though Gates is recognized as business leader rather than a political one, that does diminish his importance. His efforts to give opportunities to the less fortunate symbolizes hope for future generations. Gates influenced the world around him. He completely reformed global culture with the introduction of technology. Microsoft’s products became the medium of information exchange. All around the world, information and social interaction has changed form and became more easily accessible than ever before. However, Gates is not perfect. He has made mistakes in the past. There were certain companies that were swindled and cheated by Microsoft. A flaw with Gates is his lack of ethical business
At just twenty years old, Bill Gates cofounded Microsoft with his childhood friend Paul Allen. He is now the richest man in the world with over $85.2 billion to his name. So why did Microsoft end up being way more successful than any computer program like it? The answer is because of the free enterprise system, and competition. Gate's product was considered new and innovative at the time, which made customers want to try it out.
After having helped found what would be the world’s most popular and largest software company in 1975, Bill Gates officially found himself to be the richest man alive at the ripe, young age of only thirty-one. Gates had never imagined that the thirteen year old boy who loved to program computers in his parent’s garage would one day find himself to be considered the world’s wealthiest man alive, having a total net worth of $76 billion. Having began on his own, tinkering with computers and computer software, Gates later created the seed of Microsoft, or what was originally called Traf-O-Data in the summer of 1972. (Fast Facts) It wasn’t until two years later, with the help of his co-founder, Paul Allen that Microsoft was born, transforming the technological world in ways that the people had never seen. The birth of Microsoft changed the ways of old computers, making way for faster newer and more innovative technology, along with bringing on a strong competition with their rival company, Apple Inc. With this grand cooperation, Bill Gates was also accumulating a large mass of money, gradually finding himself to top the charts of the Forbes World Billionaires List. (Fast Facts) Despite being well known for his contributions to Microsoft, Bill Gates’ most profound impact on the American culture was in medical and educational advances provided by The Gates foundation, paralleled by his philanthropic views and aid in the lives of the both poor and wealthy.
Inventing Microsoft Windows, a software used by more than 50% of the world population in desktops/laptops, Gates practically owns the field of computer software technology. In the United States v. Microsoft Corp. Supreme Court case of 2001, Gates’ company was accused of becoming a monopoly, engaging in practices forbidden by the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. Another lawsuit was filed against Gates accusing him of monopolizing. Both of these cases were ultimately settled, allowing Microsoft to continue as it was. One could debate long and hard over whether Gates’ is the modern-age Rockefeller, controlling an entire industry. Many have tried, and failed, as seen in previous cases. Just as the other “captains of industry/robber barons” did, Gates’ saw an opportunity, took it, and completely exploited it. Whether doing so would be moral or immoral, is an entirely different argument.
Not all leaders have to be someone who will change the world. A leader may be someone who will change the life of just one person. LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth are great leaders because they have influenced the lives of many people. While many want to become like them and achieve their goals and dreams move on, to make it their enthusiasm and desire to achieve a goal are proposed. Every day thousands of people in the world struggle and persevere for a goal, which leads to achieve great things and get up and face the world day by day. There are all kinds’ leaders as example athletes, politicians, artists, singers, and etcetera. This is because we are all different and each of us has, interests and very different thoughts, and then for each person there is a skill and gift one must take advantage of it.
Gates showed an interest in computer programming at a very young age, spending all of his free time creating programs on the teletype terminal computer his school had donated. Gates went on to create Microsoft and develop the Windows operating system, which continues to be tremendously popular. Bill Gates is, like many other famous entrepreneurs, also known for his philanthropic activities, donating very large amounts of money to charitable organizations and scientific endeavors. Gates established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, a private philanthropic foundation dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing health care, improving education opportunities, and providing access to technology worldwide.
This was the same year when Bill Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft. In 1981, Bill Gates’ company was hired to develop an operating system but rather than creating a new operating system they decided to buy a preexisting operation system called QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System) for the amount of 50,000 dollars. After modifying the operating system they bought, they renamed the operating system to MS-DOS. After MS-DOS began selling it brought in a steady income for Gates due to the fact that the PC market was growing and there weren’t many competitors in the market for them to compete with. In 1986, when Microsoft Corporation went public, it made Gates into a millionaire overnight. The following year, Microsoft released their first ever version of
