The Field of Veterinary Medicine: Communication and Controversies Veterinary Medicine is a competitive field, whether you are going for your Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or to be a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). There will be competitive programs you will need to do well in to be able to continue working at getting a degree to this field. A veterinarian or vet is a professionally skilled worker licensed in providing a wide range of medical care to diverse types of animals. I was able to conduct an interview with Nadeene DeLong, Licensed Veterinary Technician who works at Town and Country Animal Care in Marlette, Michigan. She not only was able to give me information about what her day is filled with but also the knowledge …show more content…
Veterinary technicians are the doctors’ right hand man; if the doctor needs it the tech will provide it. Technicians make anywhere between 12-15 dollars an hour depending on how good you are at your job (DeLong). In May 2013 the median wage was $14.66 an hour and $30,500 a year (Statistics). Being a technician has its pros and cons. Pros including helping sick animals in need and educating the animal owner on how to better care for their companions and cons include the lack of pay technicians receive and having to put down sick animals or having one die on the surgery table (DeLong). Technicians go through a two-year program and receive an Associates Degree in Applied Sciences. Many of the everyday jobs the technicians do in a day include assisting in surgeries, dentals, animal recovery and also reading tests such as ear cytology’s, skin scrapings, and fecal reading …show more content…
Most people see veterinarians as being doctors of animals and they are there to save animals and help them when they are sick and that is what veterinarians are for but sometimes I wish people could really see what veterinarians go through in a day. As I have past experience in the field of veterinary medicine, I was fortunate enough to see behind the scenes. When I was working one of the first things the boss will tell you is to not show emotion in front of the patient’s owner, and that’s something very hard to control. Sometimes are easier then others to hold back the tears but I know there’s days that the bathroom is just a place to go cry for a good two minutes and then have to pull yourself back together again. And having emotions is something that can never be resolved. Everyday as you work in the field you do learn to cope with the sadness of people crying when they lose their companion or sometimes even when they lose their best friend. You learn to not get as involved with the personal relationships of the animal owner, because you know one day the animal will eventually die. This is not an easy field for people that have a hard time holding back their
Veterinary technicians are like the techies of the theatre; the organization would be able to function without them, but it would be much harder. Things run a lot more smoothly with vet techs. There are multiple benefits that come with being a veterinary technician. These benefits include, but are not limited to, a high job outlook, great room for advancement, and only two years of schooling (depending on the route you take). Above all, the animals, who aren’t always able to help themselves, are being taken care of.
Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Most of the clinics are open 24 hours. There is not anything that is unusual about the number of hours/nature of the job. (Bls.gov.vettech)
A vet tech can work in different work environments, such as animal hospitals, and private clinics. Working in various, environments create skillful tasks, which include: lab work, radiology, nursing care, surgery, x-rays, and assisting veterinarians in surgeries (Money Careers). Each of these tasks require their own abilities helping needy animals, for example: lab work deals with collecting samples of tissue, blood, and urine, nursing involves with taking care of the animals after the surgeries and checking on how their responding to the procedure (U.S. Bureau of Labor).
For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals, test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science. You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
The average annual salary is 93,250 dollars, they work 24 hours for 365 days of the year, they work in equine facilities, horse stables, and pastures. Being an equine vet can be mentally and physically draining of energy so know how to be patient before getting into the practice.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
In order to be a large animal veterinarian you must have to complete at least four years of college. You do not need a masters degree, only a bachelor’s degree.Your undergraduate education should mostly focus on the following: biology, zoology, physiology, anatomy, and microbiology. Colleges and universities, such as Colorado State University and the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science are well known for their veterinary medicine programs. These school are just a few among many schools that have good programs in veterinary medicine.
Veterinary technician needs 2 years of college. Vets need to take biology, sciences and as well as math. Vets work with all different types of animals. What did vet do in the past. What was the pros and cons to being one and what was the skills for the job.
Through my experiences, I have learned the reality of veterinary medicine. It is not about playing with puppies and kittens. My clients might not appreciate me, my patients might be difficult, I may get frustrated, and I might not make much money. Yet veterinary medicine is about more than that. It is a career with purpose, a lifelong source of challenge, personal growth, fulfilled academic curiosity, and opportunities to impact lives, both human and animal. In return, I offer a strong scientific aptitude, along with a diverse background and natural empathy. It will not be easy, but a degree in veterinary medicine is, without a doubt, my next pivotal step in
When she was little she could only dream of becoming a veterinarian. Now she is fulfilling her dreams as a Veterinary Technician. "Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life”(Henry Hernandez). Being a Veterinary Tech is really a lot of fun as long as you are passionate love with animals. One reason to become a Veterinary Tech is because they get to meet new animals and take care of them too. This career is very important because the well-being of animals is just as important as the well-being of humans(Vet Tech Guide). Animals need to be thought of humans just in a different shape. Loving, respecting, and comforting animals is just a small part in the career of a Veterinary Technician; being detail oriented, strong, and being educated are also very important qualities for a veterinary technician to have.
One of the many sponsors working with this organization is Animal Planet and they work to raise awareness on the importance of adopting pets in need of good homes. Animal care technicians help to monitor and maintain the health of animals that are brought to them. The salaries of one that works in this are ranges from $34,496 to $39,899 annually. The clients/participants being served here are animals. Skills that I have that fit the requirements of this job are my love of animals and wanting to make sure they're not only healthy, but also safe and taken care of.
I am one of the very few select in high school who opting for a Career choice has been effortless. As a young ,curious minded girl, I have always obtained a passion for medicine and animals. When I stumbled upon the veterinary field I knew exactly what I was going to do. In high school I was introduced to many other career paths such as infectious disease , cardiology, neurology and many more gratifying jobs but none of them involved animals. I desired a job which involved animal conservation as well as medicine. At first, I had a different notion about Zoology. I believed a Zoologist only takes care of animals in Zoo's. It later on in Life came to my knowledge that Zoological medicine is a specialty in veterinary medicine that addresses wildlife
In the nursing home, Miriam stays in her room for long hours of the day. Without family she has no one to visit her during the year. Miriam suffers from depression and anxiety caused by being alone and barely having any human interaction all day. One day a nurse suggested that Miriam join an animal-assisted therapy program in order to be able to deal with her depression. In 1972 the Society of Friends founded a mental asylum that used animals in order for their patients to be able to have a peaceful interaction with another creature. Animal-assisted therapy is very beneficial form of therapy for the patient, it reduces and improves many symptoms that the patient is struggling with. Due to the fact that many senior citizens in nursing homes often feel lonely and isolated, animal-assisted therapy can be a good way for them to have a companion and be more social with not only their animal, but other humans too.
Before even thinking about becoming a veterinarian, they must have an undergraduate education. After completing high school, one must go to college and obtain 45 credits in pre veterinary courses. These courses include anatomy, animal science, biology, chemistry, and zoology. Most students take these sciences for four years. Next the student would need to get a doctorate in veterinary medicine. This can be achieved by enrolling in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, also known as DVM or VMD, which will take four years to complete. In this course one would learn a variety of different scientific topics. Molecular biology studies the structure and function of molecules, while cellular biology studies the basic structure and function of cells. Basic medical science will be studied by students in DVM, because it works as a stepping stone to move into any career involving medicines. Veterinary medical science teaches the basics in caring for animals and diagnosing them wil typical illnesses or injuries. Students would also learn clinical skills, zoo animal health, and wildlife health. One would study veterinary issues to learn how to deal with emergencies they may encounter. Students learn the importance of food safety when dealing with animals. If an animal were to consume food that they can not have, it could lead to extreme illness or even death. A student would also get to have surgery experience and
Animal experimentation is contentious issue in today’s society that, whether it continue or should stop. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health. Among the animals monkeys are the main victims of the scientists’ experiments because of their human-like characteristics and physical process to humans. Monkeys’ similarities allow the scientists to test effectiveness of the new discovered drugs, food additives, and chemical and even cosmetics products. Although, such medical experimentations had helped scientists to produce vaccines, and medicines that are necessary for elimination of some deceases, but the test had negative medical effect on monkeys.
