In “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother,” Amy Chua argues that while Western parents have a certain way of parenting that works for them. She believes that Chinese parenting is the best way to raise a child so that they become successful adults. There are many differences between the two, from standards, to punishment, and motivation. Amy found in one study of 50 Western American mothers and 48 Chinese immigrant mothers that almost 70% of the Western mothers said either “stressing academic success is not good for children” or that “parents need to foster the idea that learning is fun.” Roughly 0% of Chinese parents felt the same. Chinese parents believe their children can handle being pushed to the extreme and it will build them up and not damage their self-esteem. One major difference between the Chinese and Western parental mindset is how they handle the self-esteem of their children. Western parents worry about how failing effects their self-esteem so they reassure them that failing is acceptable. Chinese parents do not feel this way. Chinese children spend their lives repaying their parents by obeying them and making them proud. Western parents have an opposite view; they feel it is the parents who are responsible for providing for their children. That includes their emotional mindset. Western children will owe their children. The third difference Amy talks about is that Chinese children have little to no freedom when it comes to their own daily activities. They are not allowed to have sleepovers or boyfriends/girlfriends. They are also not allowed to participate in after school activities.
