One day, Bart Simpson pushes Lisa to her limit. Their parents Marge and Homer go away for the weekend to a retreat and leave Bart in charge. Bart continues to torment and bug Lisa to no end. After reading a book at the library, Lisa puts the perfect plan together to train Bart. Their parent will be gone for three days, the weekend went as follows:
Social Learning
Early Friday morning, Lisa awoke with her plan in her hand. She would officially end Bart's behavior. She started with the concept of Social Learning. Lisa believes that Bart behaves the way he does because of his favorite show: Itchy and Scratchy. Two factors that determine this learning are attention and motor reproduction. The only problem was Bart had realized that and started misbehaving again. In phase three of Lisa's plan, Lisa planned to use reinforcement and a little punishment. As a form of positive reinforcement, Lisa promised Bart her lunch for a few weeks, a primary reinforcer. If Bart helped Lisa clean up the burger wrappers, she offered Bart all the money saved up in her piggy bank ($5) and her allowance per week ($2), a secondary reinforcer. For the first half of the day, Bart kept his deal up with Lisa. Soon after Bart began to get lazy which resulted in Lisa putting all her chores on Bart, the addition of something unpleasant: positive punishment. Every time Bart picked up a wrapper to help Lisa or cleaned up a dish, Lisa rewarded Bart with another week of her allowance. Lisa is using a continuous reinforcement schedule. Since Bart woke up at 8 a.m. and his parents would be home at 8 p.m., for every hour Bart cleaned he would be rewarded. Lisa put Bart on a fixed interval schedule giving him by giving him a high five each hour he continued to clean for. Whenever Lisa caught Bart doing what he was supposed to do, she put in place the reinforcement. Lisa put Bart on a variable ratio schedule. By 8 p.m. when their parents got home, Bart was nearly unrecognizable. He helped by cleaning, was nice, and respectful to his sister. He even stopped his violent ways!
