A strong leader is someone who helps guide other to success through positive relationships, encouragement, responsibility, and dedication to completing goals. These are all qualities that I believe I show daily in the band program. Having positive and strong relationships with different section and band members can go a long way in leadership. I have made great connections with my squad and section members especially this year, in an attempt to not only gain respect, but also so that I can understand how they learn and behave so that I can best help them. They had not had a sectional experience yet when I helped them, and many members were struggling with marching basics and music memorization, so I stayed after school and came in before school to help them learn how to do these things and improve upon what they previously knew. They improved a lot in a short amount of time due to their willingness to learn and excitement for marching band, which I was happy dedicate my time to helping them. In Jazz, I have helped my section members execute their music more cleanly, as well as emphasizing the importance of articulation and style when we did this. Some spots took a long time to get up to tempo, but we worked on them until we accomplished it, no matter how long it took(Legitimate Itch). I once went and asked for advice on how to help my section learn things quicker, and I was told to just keep doing all the things I was doing. After a while, my section would catch on and get things down better. By the end of the year, we were all learning things quicker and working harder as a group. I want to make sure I spend as much of my senior year as possible helping the people around me, as well as myself. I want to continue improving my leadership in Jazz by welcoming our new member and making sure we make even more progress next year. I think we are right at the point where with a little more push we can do great things. I really want to encourage other members in my section to solo because I know it is very hard to start and be comfortable doing. It is a journey I have started and am going to continue focusing on this summer, and I want them to also be a part of that so that we can all be the best possible. In Wind Ensemble, I want to change the way our focus in sectionals has become like recently, and try to build up confidence for all players. A lot of the music we play is difficult and lots of the trumpet players shy away from those sections, so I want us as a group to try to lean into those parts harder and just play them at a full volume until we get comfortable with it. In regard to our sectionals, the past month I have noticed how people have been taking sectionals less and less seriously, for many reasons, and I want that to change. I think if the leader next year took more of an approach where time can be split into productive time, and bonding time at the end, then people would stop acting out or simply
