Balance is a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions. Without balance, there would be an overload of one element and a lack of another. There would be no sense of harmony or feelings of wholenesses. In his novel The Road, author Cormac McCarthy displays a great deal of balance. His oeuvre involves both a positive and uplifting view of humanity, and one of darkness and pessimism. Sometimes McCarthy writes about one of the main characters in the novel, a young boy, and how much tenderness and compassion he posses inside him. Other times McCarthy mentions the people that have turned to cannibalism in order to survive and the horrendous acts of cruelty that they have performed to other human beings. One of these moments include when the young boy and his father discover a bunker full of supplies: “Crate upon crate of canned goods. Tomatoes, peaches, beans, apricots. Canned hams. Corned beef. Hundreds of gallons of water in ten gallon plastic jerry jugs. Paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates. Plastic trash bags stuffed with blankets. He held his forehead in his hand. Oh my God, he said… I found everything. Everything” (McCarthy 70-71). This was a significant part in the story because a bit beforehand both characters were desperate for supplies and it appeared as though there was little room for hope when it came to their plight, but they ended up stumbling upon a saving grace. This shows the reader that even if people are going through an immensely hellish time, it’s important to maintain hope because whatever they are going through will eventually get better, even when it really does not seem like it. McCarthy additionally adds in moments of defeat in his novel and does not stray away from the harsh truths of the character’s circumstances. One of these moments is displayed when the women–the boy’s mother and the man’s wife–is consumed with her feelings of hopelessness and embraces suicide: “They say that women dream of danger to those in their care and men of danger to themselves. He is able to reveal the dejected side of life that many people tend to avoid because looking so woebegone can be seen as weak or something to be ashamed of. Constantly creating entertainment that is only made up of fairytale-like stories can be detrimental and creates a false and unhealthy illusion of what life should be like. Then when people do experience disconsolate times, they feel disappointed because their life isn’t what the entertainment around them tells them it should be. While positive emotions are certainly an essential thing to well-being, that does not make negative emotions entirely bad or unimportant. They may not feel pleasant, but they have the ability to bring about positive effects such as putting us in touch with our deeper selves, giving us wisdom and knowledge, and teaching us how to be compassionate towards others.
