The memoir, Night, demonstrates that there is good in having hope in the sense that it can make an ideal of surviving into more of a reality, therefore it is easier to prevail.There are many points throughout the text where the author, Elie Wiesel alludes to this. At one point Elie is describing the experience close to the start of the time in the concentration camp: “Our moral was much improved. A good night’s sleep had done its work. Friends met, exchanged a few sentences. We spoke of everything without ever mentioning those who had disappeared. Every bomb that falls blossoms new hope in the heart’s of the Jews because it means that the possible idea of liberty may be turning into reality. Again, without the hope in this situation there would be no will to prevail. In another instance in the text, the words that are spoken “‘Perhaps the Russians will arrive before…’” (pg. 81) This situation takes place near the end of the book and is a very crucial part of understanding the hope throughout this memoir. Perhaps, is the key word in this specific example because it rings with hope, if you believe even in the slightest something good will happen, you will believe that it is possible, your actions will show your willingness to prevail. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel remembers his time at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Elie begins to lose his faith in God after his faith is tested many times while at the concentration camp. Elie conveys to us how horrific events have changed the way he looks at his faith and God. Through comments such as, “Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God, my soul, and turned my dreams into dust,” he reveals the toll that the Holocaust has taken on him. The novel begins during the years of 1942-1944 in Sighet, Transylvannia, Romania. Elie Wiesel and his family are deported and Elie is forced to live through many horrific events. Several events such as deportation, seeing dead bodies while at Auschwitz, and separation from his mother and sisters, make Elie start to question his absolute faith in God.
Hope was a prevailing emotion to the victims of the holocaust because hope that one day you will return home and see your family and that God will answer your prayers. Hope is all you need to keep going, and live through the horror of the camps. I believe that hope is the prevailing emotion because in the excerpt of Night, it states, “‘No!’ I cried. ‘He isn’t dead! Not yet!’”(Wiesel 104). The quote supports the emotion because Elie doesn’t know for sure if his father is dead or not, hope is what’s keeping him and the men still alive
It is reported that over 6 million Jews were brutally murdered in the Holocaust, but there were a very few who were able to reach the liberation, and escape alive. There were many important events that occurred in Elie Wiesel’s Night, and for each and every event, I was equally, if not more disturbed than the one before. The first extremely disturbing event became a reality when Eliezer comprehended that there were trucks filled with babies that the Nazi’s were throwing the children into the crematorium. Unfortunately, the sad truth of the murdering babies was clearly presented through, “Not far from us, flames, huge flames, were rising from a ditch. Something was being burned there, […] babies”, (Wiesel, Night, 32). This was one of the most disturbing events of the narrative for myself and truly explained the cruelty and torture of the Holocaust.
However, the servant to a Dutchman was not like this at all. He was loved by all and, "He had the face of a sad angel." (Wiesel 42). However, when the power station that the child worked at blew up, he was tortured for information. But the child refused to speak and was sentenced to death by hanging.
The significance of night throughout the novel Night by Elie Wiesel shows a poignant view into the daily life of Jews throughout the concentration camps. Eliezer describes each day as if there was not any sunshine to give them hope of a new day. He used the night to symbolize the darkness and eeriness that were brought upon every Jew who continued to survive each day in the concentration camps. However, night was used as an escape from the torture Eliezer and his father had to endure from the Kapos who controlled their barracks. Nevertheless, night plays a developmental role of Elie throughout he novel.
Inked on the pages of Elie Wiesel’s Night is the recounting of him, a young Jewish boy, living through the mass genocide that was the Holocaust. The words written so eloquently are full of raw emotions depict his journey from a simple Jewish boy to a man who was forced to see the horrors of the world. Within this time period, between beatings and deaths, Wiesel finds himself questioning his all loving and powerful God. If his God loved His people, then why would He allow such a terrible thing to happen? Perhaps Wiesel felt abandoned by his God, helpless against the will of the Nazis as they took everything from him.
Night by Elie Wiesel was an amazing book and a portal into his view of the life and travels inside the German Concentration Camp System. How can one keep hope in the darkest of nights? Eliezer Wiesel found and lost hope throughout his life during the Holocaust in a traumatic and heartbreaking story. The chance that he would end up in Auschwitz was beyond his control, but he quickly learned how to make decisions while in camp: keep quiet, eat the soup (even if you don’t like it), and do everything in your power to stay with who you came with. Elie wanted to believe that he could control the events happening around him, but he ended up losing his childlike view of the world in an instant. Survival was the game, anything to stay alive was the play.
As humans, we require basic necessities, such as food, water, and shelter to survive. But we also need a reason to live. The reason could be the thought of a person, achieving some goal, or a connection with a higher being. Humans need something that drives them to stay alive. This becomes more evident when people are placed in horrific situations. In Elie Wiesel's memoir Night, he reminisces about his experiences in a Nazi concentration camp during the Holocaust. There the men witness horrific scenes of violence and death. As time goes on they begin to lose hope in the very things that keep them alive: their faith in God, each other, and above all, themselves.
Humans, in all corners of the world, look to religion as a means of having a reason to live, a reason for hope. To things unknown, it is our means of an answer. Charles Kimball once said, “More wars have been waged, more people killed, and more evil perpetrated in the name of religion than by any other institutional force in human history. The sad truth continues in our present day." Thus, it is during our struggles, wars, and in this case, the Holocaust, faith in our religion is tested, maybe destroyed forever.

Despite the complexity of this question, it appears to be thoroughly answered in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel. As a matter of fact, the author and his fellow Jews remain unsuspecting of the warnings that unfold throughout the novel. Moreover, it is only until Wiesel is exposed to the malevolence of the Holocaust that he is finally able to fathom that everything has lost significance, except for “the word chimney” which Elie perceives as “the only word that had real meaning in” the Auschwitz concentration camp (Wiesel 39). Beyond the literal meaning, this metaphor reveals that the Holocaust causes Elie and his fellow Jews to become insensitive to the pain of those around them, and to lose sight of who they once were.

As stated in this quote, when we have something to hope for, and someone showing us love, we are capable of many things. In the movie Life is Beautiful and the book Night love and hope are the only things that keep the characters alive. This is shown through Elie and his father's relationship when his father reminds him of his fundamental feelings of love, compassion, and devotion to his family. Then Elie and his father look out for each other in hope to make it out the concentration camp alive. Love and hope are also shown in the movie Life is Beautiful when Guido and his son were taken to the concentration camp. Here, Guido's love for his son Josh, kept him alive. Dora, Guido's wife, shows persistent hope which ultimately leads to being reunited with Joshua. In both stories the hope that of rescue and the love that for each other gets the main characters through terrible times.
