Even as Alice’s antagonist, the Red Queen aids in creating a mindset growth in Alice by teaching her the importance of manners and respecting authority, while also giving her the understanding that she has the right to her own opinions and will not always agree with those of her authority figures. The lesson of manners and respecting authority is demonstrated when the Red Queen takes Alice to the top of the hill and tries to get to know her better by asking, “Where do you come from? . . . And where are you going? Look up, speak nicely, and don’t twiddle your fingers all the time” (171). However, as a Queen and someone of extreme power, Alice is much more likely to understand the importance of carrying herself in the right manner and learn how to properly treat authority figures. In addition, at Alice’s dinner party, the Red Queen encourages a growth mindset in Alice by questioning her manners saying, “ ‘but I daresay you’ve not had many lessons in manners yet?’ ‘Manners are not taught in lessons,’ said Alice. ‘Lessons teach you to do sums, and things of that sort’ ” (254). Earlier in the novel, Alice would go along with what the Queen said or demanded to make things easier, but as she has grown, she has built confidence in herself and begun the learn that it is okay that she has different beliefs than the Queen. For Alice lessons are not for manners, but for the Queen they are, and now, Alice has grown enough to understand that it is okay to have unique beliefs and express them freely, while still being respectful of the other person. Here, Alyss learned that she would need to live up to the real world responsibilities that people have to live up to everyday. Once in England, she was staying with a family that constantly tormented her about her claims of living in Wonderland, which caused her to lose faith in the place where she grew up and had to treat her beliefs and childhood as if they did not exist in order to live a normal life. Alyss even said, “Yes, it was a solution… Become just like everyone else.” (148) She began to accept the life of a normal girl and took on responsibilities like getting married. “If she’d had time to think about it, Alice might have stopped herself, considering the idea too whimsical. Alice is the colonised in the situation with the Queen of Hearts. When she is introduced to the Queen her evil nature is revealed as she orders “Off with her head!” (Carroll 96). However, she is contrasted to Alice’s good nature while she shouts “Nonsense!” ( Carrol 96). The theme of chaos and confusion is brought forward as they play croquet all at once with noises all around and even in the court where everyone is expected to be civil. Although the Queen, as a character reinforces adulthood, subversion emerges again by Alice standing up for herself at this time. Nearing the end of her dream, she stands up against the Queen at court but it dream ends without a resolution. In The Color Purple, Alice Walker efficiently develops Albert and Harpo through three key aspects of redemption: love, responsibility, and reflection. Albert and Harpo are both practically forced to recognize how they were treating people; Albert with Celie’s speech, and Harpo with the way Sofia beat him up. Next, the two reflect on their errors in life. How they both mistreated their wives, and suppressed them. Then they gain the bravery to apologize to the people they realized that they really do love, and be forgiven (Walker 231). Albert and Harpo learn a valuable lesson throughout the years; one they will surely never forget. Alice Walker proficiently shows the development of two new people, through redemption using love, reflection, and responsibility.
As I have written about over the last few months: A Raisin in the Sun is a play of many themes. Besides the central idea of the blacks trying to get out of the ghetto, it has many side plots. One of the most predominant of these side-plots is the role and effects of power and authority. In general, most people strive for power and control, whether they can handle it or not. In the story, evidence claims that Alice is rejecting and opposing to the religion. In reality, religion can be overwhelming to a lot of people, and Alice is no exception to this. Alice has her own way of thinking and throughout the book there are several examples where the other characters get angry, offended, or become afraid of Alice. Alice does attempt to offend fewer characters as the story progresses, but doesn’t fully accept their way of thinking. Throughout the story, Alice is rejected by the Mouse, the Duchess, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, and the Queen and King of hearts. This line of rejections continues to build up in Alice, and she gets frustrated. Finally at the courtroom scene in the “Alice’s Evidence” chapter, she continues to build up this frustration until it gets to the point where she grows in size uncontrollably, (the only time where she can’t physically control her growth,) and unleashes that anger on the Queen of hearts by saying “Who cares for you? Her eventual attentiveness could be borne from her polite nature and want of companionship, as well as from the persona of the Red Queen. The Queen represents a governess or teacher-type and thus Alice learns to listen, even when she does not fully want to. Whenever Alice is afraid she has offended someone, she tries her best to remedy the situation. “Alice curtseyed again, as she was afraid from the Queen’s tone that she was a little offended: and they walked on in silence till they got to the top of the hill” (Caroll). Alice gives of a persona of being well-trained, yet still childish and demanding. However, as she moves further through Wonderland she begins to gain more control of her childish impulses, such as being angry with the world for ‘making things difficult’ for her when she could not find her way through a maze. When she first is confronted by the problem or race it hits her with a thump. Bob takes Alice to dinner where she states, “I don’t want feel like being refused” (55). Alice does what she can to avoid the face of racism. She lacks the integration within the different community, which gives her a one-path perspective. While going to the restaurant with Bob, he asks, “Scared because you haven’t got the white folks to cover you” (55)? She doesn’t have the protection of her friends or her parents to shy away from the truth of her being African American. She is hiding behind a mask because she’s passing as white. Red is the prison’s head chef and Norma is her sidekick. Both women are in prison due to the pressures of their husbands to maintain a certain role. Red’s husband was involved in the Russian Mafia thus making her conform to the roles of a “mafia wife” that is to be quite, be helpful, and above all be respectful. Red eventually is forced to be a drug mule for the mafia landing here in jail for life. Norma on the other hand was involved with a cult leader who forced woman to marry him to make the cult larger. Norma is a mute character due to the continuous oppression by this man leading her to a complete psychotic breakdown and pushing her husband off a cliff to his death landing Norma in jail for life. Both women were once fighting for basic human rights within their own lives. Both were never looked to as an influence in a highly oppressed patriarchal society. They were women who were forced to play the historical roles of the “lady of the house.” De Beauvoir writes, “We can see now that the myth [of woman] is in large part explained by its usefulness to man. The myth of woman is a luxury. It can appear only if man escapes from the urgent demands of his needs; the more relationships are concretely lived, the less they are idealized” (1271). Here, in order to move forward, she must step back. If she wants to arrive somewhere quickly, she must walk with patience. What she considers to be common is nonsense to the characters of Wonderland. The first person she meets is the Red Queen, who is in the form of a large chess piece. The Red Queen blabbers on about the girl 's poor manners before explaining that they are all playing a giant chess game and that Alice can take the role of the White Queen 's pawn if she wishes. There are seven more squares she must pass through in order to win and become a Queen. To end the game, Alice must travel to the eighth square. As Alice makes her way through each square, she encounters various characters and creatures that provide obstacles for her to overcome. These characters range in absurdity, each with a different set of challenges. There are Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who pester Alice with riddles. They worry her by claiming that she is simply an imaginary figure in the Red King 's dream and that once he awakes she will cease to exist. Soon after leaving Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Alice meets the White queen, with whom she forgets about her previous unease. She eventually becomes acquainted with other characters, such as the Hatter and the Hare. The White knight and, consequently, a Red knight, fight one another for the right to hold her prisoner. Though, as it turns out, the White knight 's definition of 'prisoner ' entails very little imprisonment besides being forced to ride with him to the next space. Alice, as she goes through each square, discovers new ways of thinking and recognizes other viewpoints. She starts to understand the logic of her own world and how it applies in Wonderland. Alice also, however, begins to wonder at her own existence and whether or not Tweedledee and Tweedledum are right.
