The Victorian Era is known for many things. Within the time frame of Queen Victoria’s reign, there were major events such as Ireland’s potato famine, the Crimean War, as well as the industrial revolution. In the literary world, however, the era sprouted many of the world’s famous Victorian-based novels that are still being read today. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is well-known by most people for its vivid use of the imagination. The story itself is one that promotes creativity, open-mindedness and viewing the world in different perspectives. While Lewis Carroll’s story captivates and inspires people of all ages, what brings a young girl’s adventure to life are the illustrations behind it. Grandville. Grandville’s artistic ability to morph animals and inanimate objects with human-like qualities that brought Tenniel to include anthropomorphism into his own work with Punch. It was due to a great talent in this that brought Dodgson’s attention to Tenniel in the first place, as well as vice versa when Tenniel looked over Dodgson’s story. This inspiration was eventually transferred over into the Alice projects to be able to successfully recreate the characters in the novel. Besides Dodgson’s specific instructions for the illustrations, John Tenniel created his pictures without much help except for this inspiration. When Dodgson first hired Tenniel, he tried to provide Tenniel with as much resources as possible, including his own sketches and models. Despite having these resources, Tenniel did not need them. In fact, this disturbed Dodgson for he wanted Tenniel to use his examples. According to Gill Stoker, in a letter to another illustrator, Dodgson wrote: “Mr. Tenniel is the only artist, who has drawn for me, who resolutely refused to use a model, and declared he no more needed one than I should need a multiplication-table to work a mathematical problem!”
