To name a few verses including the ones from 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grief’s.” Hebrew 13:5, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Proverbs 13:11, Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathered by labor shall increase.” Proverbs 23:5, “Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? Jesus never proclaims that possessions or money is inherently evil, but he does warn against the danger of greed. Jesus does not attack money and possessions, but speaks against becoming enslaved to things of this world. Kraybill proclaims, “We too easily bow down and worship at the altar of materialism.”(Kraybill 2011). Kraybill explains that Jesus’ intentions were to have us apply the same structure and economic principles of the Jubilee to our entire life. The Jubilee system requires that the rich distribute what they have evenly, just as God distributes his love to us all without judgment. Jesus encourages us to practice this on a daily basis. Jesus builds his teachings around serving and loving others first. The pleasures of the world should never be the main focus of our life. Jesus teaches that only when we live our lives in this way can we truly see the Kingdom of God. If we allow money and possessions to be the ruler of our lives they will choke our spiritual growth and we will never be able to live out the true purposes of our lives. The adrenaline-rushing feeling of gambling offers people the idea that opportunity lies within their hands. Unfortunately, there are far too many consequences to gambling to even begin to count. To win you must play, and to win big you must play big. As more gamblers can recall their losses rather than their winnings, gamblers are often dealt with poor hands and must play the risky game to stay alive. Even though gambling has so many faults, some still fall under its corruptions because of gambling’s deceiving fallacies.
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
Wealth and fame are not necessities that are needed to be happy with life. Fame and wealth are very sought after, because many people think those things and happiness go hand and hand. People are often mislead by this theory, money can make a person happy but it can also ruin every relationship they have and it can kill any ounce of joy they have. Wealth can be an idol that blinds people to the truly important things in life. When people solely focus on money to make them happy, they become emotionally and physically exhausted.
While it may appear as Jesus simply does not like those with wealth, there is actually a deeper issue he is trying to address. It’s the idea that man cannot serve two masters (Morlan, David S). Mammon, wealth, acts as an idol, when people hold it in such high regards they are worshipping an idol, and that is exactly how Jesus approaches the subject. “Hence, “wealth” is not simply money and possessions, but the enslaving power of mammon that hinders us from doing justice for the poor and competes with God for our loyalty and devotion (16:13)” (Snyder, Belousek, Darrin W).
It could easily be said that gambling is as American as apple pie. Gambling has shaped American history since its beginning. Lotteries were used by the First Continental Congress to help finance the Revolutionary War. Many of our founding fathers, such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George. Washington, have sponsored private lotteries.
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
Workers that earned their wages held on to their money and avoided the luxuries of life. Workers who saved their money might want to spend it. The Ascetic idea of spending money was a against Gods graces. In the reading Richard Baxter explains how wealth can corrupt an individual. Baxter (1904) states, “wealth as such is a great danger, its temptations never end, and its pursuit is not only senseless as compared with the dominating importance of the Kingdom of God, but it is morally suspect” (186).
Thousands of people fall victim to a game where the opponent is the guaranteed winner ninety nine percent of the time. This game is known as gambling and has many negative effects on society. Many people enjoy gambling once in a while, but many people also enjoy gambling too much, to the point that they have gone bankrupt and formed a horrible addiction. Gambling can be known to bring excitement, government revenue and lower taxation on citizens. Something that is not worth hurting peoples lives by causing financial harm, emotional harm, social harm and many other negative effects on society.
Thousands of people go to the races and bet their money on this horse or the other. Believe it or not, money is one of the major things that makes the world go round and some of those believe that money does indeed buy happiness in our lives. We all have heard the stories of those who have won thousands to even millions of dollars just by gambling and we instantly think that could be us.
