Imagine being terrified each morning of a gun shooting happening in your neighborhood, school, or even at your own home. The government is figuring out if they should tighten gun control or just leave it alone. Gun control should be tightened because it keeps people from killing other people. The first reason being guns by themselves are nothing but an item, but if a person were to wield it and kill many people, it becomes a killing machine. According to Amanda Marcotte at the Rolling Stone news (2015), “A murderer can often kill one person or two with a knife before being stopped. But to really rack up those mind blowing death counts_ to make that many lives are destroyed and families ruined in the space of five or 10 minutes- you need a gun.” This quote is saying you can use a knife to kill, but guns are more effective in many people. The actual killer was tackled by an elderly man.” (Marcotte, 2015) There are many disadvantages that could appear. One being it could hurt you or anyone around you. Gun control is a topic that stirs a strong opinion from the general public. Gun control is the effort to regulate or control usage and sales of guns. The right to bear arms is granted to all Americans by the Second Amendment and many consider it essential to maintain order in the United States of America. Even though this was the Second Amendment right granted to citizens in the Bill of Rights, many Americans opt not to own a gun, and others would like for this right to be abolished altogether. Both sides of this issue have a good argument, but when further researched, there are many more details that come up explain why siding against gun control is a better conclusion for the United States and its people. Some may say gun control should be enforced because it will make the pubic a safer place to be and decrease gun violence. “An average of eight children and teens under the age of twenty are killed by guns every day" ("Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence", 2012). The United States' current president, Barack Obama, is currently working on enforcing and passing more laws and legislation to protect the families and the citizens of the United States. The successful enforcement of our current laws would be a major stride toward decreasing the amount of crimes committed with guns and the amount of criminals with gun possession. The most challenging element of the gun control debate is whether existing gun laws are adequate or whether more gun laws need to be created and enforced.
Gun control is an issue that is constantly being debated. There are people who are pro gun control and those who believe gun control is unconstitutional to the citizens. Many political leaders and organizations have strong opinions on gun control, which keeps the gun control debate publicized. Gun control is limiting or taking the right of citizens to carry or purchase a gun. Guns are used for protecting the citizens by police officers and the military, as well as for many personal reasons like hunting and self-defense. Left, right, Liberal, Conservative, Democratic, Republican. There are a lot of synonyms for the sides of our nation divided. Divided on many things: religion, political views, morals, etc.. For a nation that prides ourselves on extraordinary security and unity, it is quite ironic that so many issues can cause such distress and uproar within communities. One such issue is gun control. As a white male in a middle-lower class family that has never owned a gun, I may be somewhat biased. Objectively as I can, I am going to report the facts and more importantly, try to find the core issues at play.
McMahan backs up his premises by showing that in other “Western Countries, per capita homicide rates, as well as rates of violent crime involving guns, are a fraction of what they are in the United States.” (McMahan, 4) After reading this statement, we are to assume that those countries have more gun regulations, and ultimately our limited gun regulations and access to firearms are what is driving so much violence within our country. Americans are faced with a huge problem of violence in the streets, these streets have become a place where old people are beaten for their social security checks, where little women are attacked and raped, where teen aged thugs shoot it out for some turf to sell their illegal drugs, and finally where small children everyday are caught in the way of bullets during drive by shootings. We try to ignore the criminals in our society and how they hurt it, but we shouldn’t. We should take actions to stop these acts of crazy people. And people try, but the hard work of some misguided individuals to stop the legal ownership of guns doesn’t really affect the problem at all, and takes the guns from the innocent citizens, who simply want means of self defense.
The Gun Control problem in the United States of America is all because of the problem that we have with people not knowing how to use a gun, and the safety. The reason the laws are being brought to legislation is make sure that we protect our second amendment. Make sure that every American has the same right a bear a weapon, no matter the age but if they are fit to own a weapon.
Events like the shooting in Sandy Hook and the shooting in a Colorado theater have led many government officials to support gun control laws. Though, many government officials still believe in the 2nd Amendment, which states, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The headlines reads lone gunman on local campus with five hostages and two critically injured. The first thing that comes to mind, is it could be a mother, father, sister, brother, or friend. Calls are made to cell phones to no avail, panic set in and worry fills minds. The police are telling worried students, parents, wives, and husbands to not panic and to stay home. Today sadly firearms have become a part of everyday life. Gun violence in America is a public health crisis, which needs to be recognized and changed by legislatures, and the voting American. As conscious Americans, we need to vote for changes to gun laws that would improve background checks nation-wide, make firearm registration mandatory, restrict the sale of assault weapons and weapon modifications that give the shooter military-grade fire power, and invest in gun-safe technology and safe firearms storage designs. This type of technology will help prevent criminally oriented people from accessing guns, and will help prevent the accidental deaths of many children by guns. The debate over gun control in America has constantly been brought up over the years due to gunmen killing large amounts of people in shootings. From Columbine to Sandy Hook, or the shootings of the two reporters in West Virginia, these public shootings are occurring everywhere. Lawmakers and civilians alike are pushing for increased gun control in hopes of preventing the same tragedies. Anyone that has been affected by the shootings has been pushing Congress and state governments to force new sanctions on the government. Over the past three years, Congress has shot down all the laws despite the large amounts of public support.

Gun control is an awfully big issue in the United States today. Many people in America don’t agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns aren’t very likely to be attacked by criminals. Gun control laws are not a good idea, and are taking part in the loss of our freedom that was given to us.
