Armbrust, M., Fox, A., Griffith, R., Joseph, A. D., Katz, R., Konwinski, A., ... & Zaharia, M. (2010). A view of cloud computing. Communications of the ACM, 53(4), 50-58.

The article introduced the definition of cloud computing as both the applications delivered as services over the Internet and the data centers that provide those services. The article also compared the cloud computing with conventional data storage in many aspects. The author concluded that cloud computing is superior because it simplified operation and increased utilization via resource virtualization.

The author successfully compared the cloud computing with conventional data storage with the help of a graph of computing process and a chart of the advantages of each method. Detailed calculations made by the author are also convincing for illustrating the efficiency of cloud computing. The article helped people to understand why cloud computing was better than conventional way of computing.

Ryan, M. D. (2011). Cloud computing privacy concerns on our doorstep. Communications of the ACM, 54(1).

Cloud computing raises privacy concerns because the service provider has access to all the data, and could accidentally or deliberately disclose it and use it for unauthorized purposes. The article gave an example of such problem by discussing about the conference management systems. Information of the conferences might be disclosed to unrelated people, causing unwelcome consequences. The article also suggested several ways to prevent the security problem, such as processing encrypted data in the cloud.

One thing the article didn’t do well is that it didn’t introduce enough background on cloud computing and jumped into the privacy concerns of c...

Jackson, K. R., Ramakrishnan, L., Muriki, K., Canon, S., Cholia, S., Shalf, J., ... & Wright, N. J. (2010, November). Performance analysis of high performance computing applications on the amazon web services cloud. Cloud Computing Technology and Science, 10, 159-168.

The article evaluated the performance of high performance computing (HPC) applications on the amazon web services EC2. It showed that amazon EC2 is slower than conventional computing system. The internal communication of EC2 severely limits the performance and causes significant variability.

Good charts and graphs were used to illustrate the poor performance of EC2 compared to conventional computing system. The article made people wonder about cloud computing by casting doubt on the performance of cloud computing. It is useful for people to understand the tradeoff of cloud computing technique.
