The Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry
The book, The Seven Daughters of Eve, by Bryan Sykes tells us how he has
decoded mitochondrial DNA and used it to trace the linage of human evolution. In
his book he relates personal and historical short accounts, offering familiar ground to
consider the science. In his findings he believes that 90 % of modern Europeans are
descendants of seven women and takes you on a journey into each of their lives.
Bryan Sykes is a professor of human genetics at the University of Oxford.
With recent research and pioneered techniques he has often been called upon to
investigate high profile cases. His large library of various researches over the last decades
have enabled him to use genetic data from humans that accumulated over time and
extract DNA surviving in ancient bones. Specifically mitochondrial DNA .This type
of mitochondria can be extracted from humans in maternal lineages that are
characterized by specific shared mutations. Sykes also has discovered the sequence
of DNA in collagen by determining the sequence of amino acids in prehistoric bones.
Because of his expertise in these matters, Sykes was called in on a case about a mans body found in 1991 in the Italian alps by Erika and Helmet Simon. These two very experienced climbers discovered a frozen Iceman wearing very little and strange clothing. ... and therefore mitochondrial DNA is inherited only from the mother. Thus this DNA would be a unaltered sequence passed strictly along maternal lines and only changing by accident or mutation.
Therefore, as you can see Sykes theory is consistent with scientific evidence and since there is rarely any doubt about the identity of a child’s mother, It makes perfect since to trace a maternal line of inheritance with mitochondrial DNA. How much easier and more accurate would it have been to trace back to our ancestors had every woman kept her mothers clan name and passed it down generation to generation even when they took on their husbands martial name. We could have then constructed a magnificent maternal genealogy that would have maybe embraced the entire globe and that would have allowed us to trace a more perfect, flawless linage of human evolution.
The Apostle Paul, urged wives to obey their husbands and husband to respect their wives. This sums up the traditional idea of the family throughout Jewish history as pictured in the Bible. The man was the head of the house, however both man and woman worked together for the benefit of the family. In Ancient Israel, it was the parents who used to find a suitable match for their daughters’. One the suitable match is found, the bride’s family gives the daughter to the groom’s family and in return they were given a gift – a dowry. A married couple was an economic partnership, that is, if the man ended up penniless, his wife would be sold in slavery along with him. The wife’s first duty in the family was to give birth. A boy would’ve been preferred in order to continue her husband’s name. Children were taught by their mothers’ the required technical skills needed to participate in and eventually take over the productive and processing tasks of the family household. Females in both texts, Gilgamesh and Genesis/Exodus, are not talked about very much at all and I think that in its self says a lot. When women are brought up they are either being used or doing something great. Even though they are only talked about a few times, when they actually are talked about it makes an impact on the story. Women are put into this story to make a difference to one of the other characters in the story.
Tragically, the butchered upper-torso of Winter’s once-robust body was stumbled upon by his father, who had noticed the absence of his son since Sunday, March 11 (Smith 2002, 25-26). Unsurprisingly, an investigation occurred to obtain the identity and whereabouts of the murderer. When the various pieces of the body are found in differing areas of the town, theory begins to formulate that the murder was conducted by one of the two butchers in town; Adolph Lewy, a Jew, and Gustav Hoffman, a Christian, due to the precision of the cuts made upon Winter’s body (Smith 28).
The novel complicates its own understanding of women
Did The Green Knight poem make allusions to Biblical tales? . Allusions is a vague description of a person, place or thing without being too specific. Allegory is a hidden meaning within a story that one has to discover on his or her own. Green Knight makes allusions towards the bibical tales of The Garden of Eden. The allegoring retelling of The Garden of Eden is apparent in the Green Knight in one big way, temptaion. The symbolic references from both stories are similiar in many aspects.
This paper will discuss the well published work of, Pomeroy, Sarah B. Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity. New York: Schocken, 1975. Print. Sarah B. Pomerory uses this book to educate others about the role women have played throughout ancient history. Pomerory uses a timeline to go through each role, starting with mythological women, who were called Goddesses. She then talks about some common roles, the whores, wives, and slaves during this time. Pomerory enlightens the audience on the topic of women, who were seen as nothing at the time. Men were seen as the only crucial part in history; however, Pomerory’s focus on women portrays the era in a new light.
Throughout history, it is clear that men are usually seen to be advantaged by the logic of domination while females tend to be disadvantaged. Whether it be in the workplace, household, or even the bible men have always been inferior to women. Through history, cultural norms and stereotypes gender roles were created and have been present throughout society. Although it is believed that males are more advantaged than females the texts Eve and Adam: Genesis 2-3 Reread by Phyllis Trible and The Creation and Fall of Man and Woman explain how men and woman are in fact equal and maybe even disadvantaged by these cultural arrangements. Therefore, throughout history it is clear that gender discourses would allow one to believe that men are advantaged
We can see the poem deals with the entire story of man's fall from grace, including background for Satan's motives. In Paradise Lost, Eve was tricked by Satan, who assumed the form of a serpent, into eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Satan had whispered into her ear when she was asleep, and when he spoke to her later, he used his cunning to mislead her:

How much control do women have over their emotions in the Aeneid? In his poem, Virgil frequently shows women in situations where irrational thoughts lead to harmful choices. Specifically, Virgil presents women as being easily influenced by their emotions. Consequently, these characters make decisions that harm both themselves and those around them. Throughout Aeneas’s journey, divinities such as Juno and Venus are seen taking advantage of the emotions of different women, influencing these characters to act in ways that ignore important priorities. Not only does Virgil present women as completely vulnerable to their emotions, but he also shows the problems that arise when these women engage in decisions where they put their own feelings ahead of their people. Virgil explicitly shows women neglecting important responsibilities when he describes passages concerned with Dido’s affair and her death, the Trojan women burning their own ships, Queen Amata’s opposition to Latinus’s proposal and her tragic death.
The film The Three Faces of Eve is based on a real-life story of Chris Costner, who was a victim of Dissociate Identity Disorder. She arguably developed this mental disorder following three different grisly accidents that she witnessed. Joanne Woodward acted the role of Costner and depicted the three personalities resulting from the psychological upset. The three characters are; Eve White, Eve Black, and Jane. Three Faces of Eve is a 1957 film that presents a case of a woman 's psychological problems and eventual treatment (Goodman 1996). The woman who acts as Eve White in the film is shown as mentally upright, reserved, and motherly at the initial episodes of the movie. In a startling twist of events, a new character of Eve White, Eve Black emerges. Eve Black is fun loving and antisocial. This character change comes as a surprise to her husband. In the later episodes of the film, a third character of Eve White, Jane emerges. Jane provides a resolution to the already fragmented film show. In the movie play, there are dramatic episodes. For instance, Eve 's husband is attracted to her due to his ignorance of her illness but a later manifestation of the mental disorder drives her to conspire killing
In our present era, there is no doubt that the evolution of women's rights has come a long way. It is in the Western Culture that these values for which women have fought for generations, are in conflict with Genesis 1-3. The events that occur in this "creation story" are crucial in that it begins when God creates man in his own likeness and man is given domination over all living things. The significance is the prominence given to men; God is male and his most important creation is male. The biblical account underlines the supremacy of man while making it clear that women play an inferior role. Furthermore, the biblical account also describes how woman are disobedient and yield to temptation, the result of which is the expulsion of both Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. In the poem "How Cruel is the Story of Eve", Stevie Smith's castigation towards the biblical story of Eve demonstrates how women have been victims of despair and suffering since the beginning of time. She holds it responsible for cruelty towards women in history, she implies that the values derived from the story of Eve were forced upon women without choice, and finally, she challenges the authenticity of the religious tale on a whole. Without a doubt, women have fallen victim to an untrue, religious tale from the beginning of time, and the poem is an outcry representing the suffering of women throughout history.
It is impossible to taste the sweet without having first tasted the sour. This is one of the many lessons found within Genesis 2.0 and more specifically the story of Adam and Eve. It is also from this twisted tale of betrayal and deceit that we gain our knowledge of mankind?s free will, and God?s intentions regarding this human capacity. There is one school of thought which believes that life is mapped out with no regard for individual choice while contrary belief tells us that mankind is capable of free will and therefore has control over hisown life and the consequences of his actions. The story of Adam and Eve and the time they spent in ?paradise? again and again points to the latter as the truth. Confirming that God not only gave mankind the ability to think for himself but also the skills needed to take responsibility for those thoughts and the actions that they produced.

“Dream not of other worlds,” the angel Raphael warns Adam in Miltons’s Paradise Lost (VIII.175). Eve, however, dreams of another world in which she will gain knowledge and power, a wish that is superficially fulfilled when she succumbs to Satan’s temptation and eats from the Tree of Knowledge. Awakening in the Garden of Eden as though from a dream, Eve searches for her identity and her place in Paradise. Satan provides Eve with a chance to gain knowledge and to become god-like. As Eve is not an equal companion for Adam, she seeks independence from her husband. Shifting her loyalty away from God and Adam and towards Satan and the Tree of Knowledge, Eve strives to find her identity in the Garden of Eden, gain knowledge and godliness, and obtain independence from her unequal partnership with Adam.
