In the interview, “Millennials in the Workplace” with Simon Sinek, he implores that millennials should find a balance between social media and their physical life. One of the strategies that Sinek uses is parallel structure, where he states the four reasons why millennials are being very criticized nowadays, “ It can be broken down into 4 pieces actually. 1 Parenting. 2 Technology. 3 Impatience. 4 Environment. The generation that is called the millennials, too many of them grew up subject to “failed parenting strategies.” (2017, 1:44). Throughout the interview, Sinek explains his reason and goes back to the next topic, for example, parenting. That chiming sound when you get a kill, not dying after a couple minutes, headshots, ultimate kills and many more things that make me happy, give me a sense of satisfaction as well. Sinek supports his claim with evidence that we are becoming addicted to technology, “We know that engagement with social media and our cell phones releases a chemical called dopamine. That’s why when you get a text - it feels good. In a 2012 study, Harvard research scientists reported that talking about oneself through social media activates a pleasure sensation in the brain usually associated with food, money, and sex.” (2017, 3:13). We rely on attention, such as when you post one of your favorite Starbucks drinks, hoping to get more than thirty likes. This is what is keeping us from getting the jobs we want and it also risks our career. What do I mean when I say it risks our career? An example in which that risks our career would be someone going to college and decides to drink and blackout. They have no idea what happened but the videos on Facebook help them remember every embarrassing single detail. Those videos can affect your entire career and even your social life! Okay, have the meeting and then my favorite is when there’s a cell phone there. And you go, it rings and you go “I’m not going to answer that” Mr. Magnanimous.” (2017, 13:05). When Sinek says, “Mr. Magnanimous” in a sarcastic tone he is trying to give the audience imagery on how ridiculous it looks when you’re in an important setting and you worry about your phone more than anything else. That for us it’s so respectful to say we’re not going to answer a call when we shouldn’t have the phone out anyways. That’s why he uses the word magnanimous for diction. Sinek uses a lot of great examples and information to defend his claim and I agree with him. Millennials NEED to find a balance between social media and actual social interaction, if we don’t we’ll remain with a negative point of view on
