Have you ever worked for a company that has a mixed age of workers? The article, “What Happens When Millennials Run The Workplace?” published in The New York Times in March 2016 is about millennials starting a business and running a successful website. According to Dictionary.com, a millennial is, “a person born in the 1980s or 1990s, especially in the U.S.; a member of Generation Y”. The website “Mic” was created about five years ago in New York. It was created to appeal to millennials and to provide a new type of work environment for millennials. “Mic” has one-hundred six people on their staff writing stories like “When Men Draw Vaginas” or “Don’t Ban Muslims, Ban Hoverboards”. Altchek started the business, “out of a 15,000-square-foot converted warehouse in the Hudson Square neighborhood.” (Widdicombe).
“Mic” is described as being, “aggressively playful….like a middle-school fraternity house” (Widdicombe). Widdicombe describes the newsroom as being crowded, with employees riding hoverboards and “wield[ing]” Nerf guns. One employee is carrying around a megaphone to make announcements, while there is a white Maltese terrier running around the room. The fun loving environment is meant to appeal to the idea of everyone having a say in the company.
Altchek is proud of the culture that he has created for his company. He believes that the “freewheeling” culture allows people to be comfortable when sharing ideas and allowing the best ideas to “rise to the top”. The employees are encouraged to get their work done and still be able to have a positive and fun environment. The first line of Pavelski’s article read, “I said that I was leaving town for a funeral, but I lied.” Pavelski continued on and wrote about how he was feeling burned out and overworked by his job. His solution? He would rebuild a treehouse from his childhood “as therapy”. Pavelski’s actions showed the stereotype of millennials feeling the need to overshare everything on social media. Instead of just going home and building his treehouse in peace, Pavelski felt the need to share every detail online for anyone to see.
