Autism spectrum disorder, commonly known as autism, is a complex disability that affects a person’s ability to effectively communicate and interact with others (“What is Autism?”). Every year thousands are diagnosed with autism and is quite commonly recognized in children between the ages of two and three years old. People who live with autism primarily associate themselves with a number of behaviors such as “delayed learning of language, difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation, difficulty with executive functioning which relates to reasoning and planning, as well as narrow, intense interests, poor motor skills, and sensory sensitivities” (“What Is Autism?”). After constant battle between Issy’s aggressive disability and Kelli’s desire for her to be normal again, once Kelli realized that Issy would not be the perfect child she imagined her to be after receiving treatment, Kelli grew desperate and like Issy, resorted to violence when things were not able to go her way. A few days after receiving successful treatment at Great Lakes Center for Autism Treatment and Research for Issy’s violent tantrums and beatings towards her mother, an optimistic Kelli was confident that her life would be turned completely around until Issy “hit” her from behind, causing Kelli to lose all hope. On September 3rd 2013, Kelli resorted to her last option to live a happy normal life, a life without Issy. “She drove down a familiar hiking path and parked in a secluded woody spot, then gave Issy four Risperdal which is double of Issy’s nighttime dosage that makes her sleepy. Next, she put smoldering charcoal grills in the center of the vehicle, shut the doors and allowed carbon monoxide to fill the space. After being gone for several hours, Lisa, Kelli’s friend whom she casually told about the trip, informed her husband of Kelli’s previous whereabouts and around 7 p.m. police found them nose to nose in the vehicle with Issy’s skin roasting hot, while Kelli remained stripped to her under garments and her carbon monoxide-poisoning levels much lower than Issy’s” (Rosin 9-10). After the attempted murder Kelli was sentenced by the courts to 10-22 years in prison, a sentence that she was not satisfied with as she argued that a sentence of 15 years, one for every year of Issy’s life, was much more suitable.
