Many of us have thought our success comes from long hours of stress, and pulling “all-nighters” to attain the grades we all hope and desire to have. But what if there is a different way to achieve the grades you wanted and get all the hours of sleep you wanted. Cal Newport displays that perfectly, when writing his non-fiction book, How to Become a Straight-A Student. This essay will explore five techniques I can use during my daily life in high school and possibly when I am off to college.

Newport writes, “your schedule varies each day. But you should be able to identify at least one hour on each weekday that is consistently free.” (47). Being able to identify this my free time this is the part of the day that I do not do anything, will show me that this where you start your work instead of procrastinating. Procrastination has always been something I tend to always do, but with the help of Newport “Build a Routine” (47) has shown me to build around my days. Once your day is always constant and consisting of the same, my mind will get in the mindset of this is what I need to accomplish and right now, not at a different time. Newport showed me that I will defeat procrastination, I will not let it get its victory. Accepting that I have a problem of procrastinating will show me that this needs to change in order for me to be successful for my senior year and my life. Being able to adjust and be flexible is a tool that will help me in my life. Cal Newport writes of a study of a kid just like me and anyone else and how he incorporated a schedule of his day. He writes” Stephen once again whips out his list and makes a couple of rapid changes to the Today’s Schedule column.” (36). Stephen being able to be so flexible with his day allowed him to finish everything he needed to do, so that he can go to his party and be stress free. Director one day told about a technique similar to Stephen’s it is a list of your day on the left and the important tasks on the right that you need to get to. Me being able to adapt to the changes will prepare me for the real world because anything can happen in a second and it is up to me how I will react.
