Analysis Of BJ Miller's TED Talk

In his TED Talk, BJ Miller discussed the end of life with the hope of bringing attention to how we die. BJ Mille started of his presentation by talking about his experience with death and how one night changed his whole life. It is through his own death and the lives of his patients that Miller can fully explain what it truly felt like to experience dying and what our healthcare needs to improve on how people die. For Miller, the fundamental problem for hospitals is that they were designed to be a place to treat diseases, not a place for people and those with terminal diseases. He explained that we have to change the system so that it is more sensitive towards differentiating between necessary suffering which is the consequences of their condition …show more content…

The first trait we have in common is how he handled talking about the night he lost his limbs. As he told the story of that night, Miller ended it by telling a joke about how the watch he wore that night still worked and that his dad still wore it as a remembrance. Even during his whole presentation, BJ Miller seemed to be using humor to alleviate the seriousness of his talk. This is what makes Miller and I similar, whenever I am in an awkward or serious situation, I tend to use humor as a way to cut the tension and to feel more comfortable. Another similarity between BJ Miller and I is the joy and happiness he finds in the littlest things such as the snowball moment he had in the burn unit. I can relate to Miller because I have had days where I could barely get out of bed but finding those little things in life gave me hope that it would get better and if it doesn't I would be okay. Those trivial moments in our lives can give us hope and encouragement to live and that it would be okay no matter what. I think the biggest similarity Miller and I share is the fact that he used his experience to teach others. With my personality, I tend to want to always take care of others and help them in any way I can even if it was just telling them my experiences and how they can learn from it.
