Individual and Group Skills
Assignment 1
An Interpersonal Communication Breakdown
Interpersonal communication is a vital social tool and can be described as an exchange of information in order to form and maintain relationships (Gamble and Gamble 2008, p.4). A disruption to this information at any point may alter the way in which a message is received. This is evident from a personal perspective, such as an occasion that I attended a family dinner.
It is important to understand how communication works and the processes involved in its use. This is due to the potential consequences involved if information is misinterpreted. Interpersonal communication is most often unnoticed, however a breakdown at any stage of the process can change the meaning of a message entirely. Gamble and Gamble (2008) recognize that there are seven stages in the communication process. The seven stages they describe are:
- People (which is further broken up into senders and receivers)
- Messages (the information that is to be conveyed)
- Channels (the method in which the message is sent)
- Noise (anything that interferes with the sending of the message)
- Context (the place that the message is sent)
- Feedback (a response to the message)

Such as an occasion in which I attended a dinner at my stepfather’s house. My family and I were sitting with my stepfather’s elderly relatives, and we were being asked what my siblings and I saw as slightly awkward questions. Strom and Strom (2014) suggest that in a modern society, younger people are more likely to form bonds with people similar in age to their own. This is largely due to an interconnectedness afforded them by the internet. As a result of this, younger generations may seldom communicate with older generations and have difficulty expressing themselves around

Miscommunication is a struggle that lives within the world everyday. Being able to understand what another person is trying to convey is an essential part of the way humans interact with one another. When a message is not translated correctly from person to person conflict arises and heated battles rage within a relationship; whether it is a mother and daughter, or two quarreling lovers, or strangers upon the street. All humans are created differently, with diverse upbringings, perspectives, and mindsets. Particular forms of communications may mean different things to various people. When talking about the concept of miscommunications, one must also address the concept of communication itself.
“Hush” is a popular episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is due to the twenty-nine minutes of the characters not speaking because their voices are taken away. The characters see the value of communication to solve their issues. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is related to real life problems such as insecurities and weaknesses. Some of these insecurities and weaknesses involved are identitiesidentity, relationships, and responsibilitiesduties. Also, adolescence because it is a time of growing and realizations. They mature through their experiences and battles of everyday life. and fighting. This occurs in a place called Sunnydale ,where during this time of the episode which monsters lurk around and are hunted. In the episode “Hush”, the voices taken away from the residents of Sunnydale represent the theme that communication is needed for understanding and solving problems.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters, or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.

Communication is the process of conveying information to each another using words, actions, or by writing the information down to be read by another person. Communication is something that most people do at some point each day, and is an important part of life especially in a working environment. “The concept of communication is an essential part of every profession, and it is required to foster and maintain healthy relationships”( Jasmine, 2009, para. 1).
The need for interpersonal communication across all human endeavors is growing especially in the context of

Communication is very complex and thus involves a lot of entities that work together in the process. The two types of communication are verbal and non-verbal, and their main purpose is to create and share meaning. Meaning is the stream of visual, auditory and other sensory sensors that serve as mediums of transporting meaning. The transmission of meaning allows us to interpret the meaning based on our frame of reference and filters which help us associate and categorize the message. This interpretation is influenced by our values, culture, past experiences, beliefs, attitude, personal goals and many more. (Atherton, 2013). Communication is essential for all relationships to grow and work effectively, lack of communication often results in break downs and
The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals. The reason why I’m doing so is because I’m still on that learning curve…an ongoing process. If can recall back to all of our assignment in this course they all bring one collective point. That point is that, Interpersonal communication is an essential skill in everything that we do in life.
Interpersonal communication is one of the significant skills while communicating with other individuals. It normally covers an extensive area and includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. Body language and facial expression may affect the accurateness of the message transmission directly. Interpersonal communication skills normally ensure that the message is sent and received correctly without any alteration thus improving the communication efficiency. Learning diverse aspects of interpersonal communication has greatly aided me in better understanding of what it consists. I am capable of applying the knowledge gained from this course to my personal experiences. This paper reflects on my personal experience in learning interpersonal communication.
Communication is an interdependent process of sending, receiving, and understanding messages. The definition implies that the components of the communication process cannot be examined separately. Rather, the relationship exists between the sender and the receiver, as well as the environment of the communication event, must be viewed as a whole. According to this perspective, if any of the components and circumstances change (that is, the number of individuals involved in the interaction, seating arrangements, or the time of the day) the communication event is altered. Communication is an ongoing process; we never stop sending and receiving messages. As we will discover, communication is a dynamic process, a process that changes from one communication setting to the next. Although it is difficult to predict, the ways of interpreting communication, certain components are always present in the communication process.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
