The story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan discusses the hardships the author faced throughout her life trying to become a prodigy and meet up to the expectations of her mother. Growing up in America I was much like the author. My parents sacrificed everything they had to come America so that me and my siblings and i could live the American dream. My parents always wanted me to become a doctor or a lawyer even though i had no passion for it, they only wanted what was best for me and sometimes that meant me sacrificing a lot of free time and a lot of activities i enjoyed. In “ Two kinds” Amy Tan uses characterization, point of view, imagery and mother’s diction to convey her theme of mother daughter relationships. characterization is what is describing a character looks and acts. in “ Two kinds ” Jing-Mei is characterized as a smart talented rebellious girl. While her mother is described a strict, traditional and impatient. Jing-Mei and her mom characteristics contradict each other. in the beginning of the story Jing-Mei is excited about discovering the prodigy side of her but due to her mother's impatience and the constant testing she soon loses hope. while Jing-Mei is described throughout the story as a very emotional character her mother show little emotion throughout the story.
