America prides itself on being a classless society where economic status can be transcended by determination and hard work. However since 1970s US had moved from a liberal biopolitic society to neoliberal society where government’s responsibility in responding to social problems has been reduced. As the social services are reduced the poor and elderly population stands in direct contradiction to the ideology of American Dream and the classless society.In fact US has the second lowest level of intergenerational mobility among high income countries and the second lowest wealth equality rate. However Cultural myth and ideology work to mask this contradiction allowing it to exist and slip under the public’s radar. Reality shows on TV offers unscripted Reality TV unscripted representations of people and produces knowledge that instructs audiences
