op culture is a norm for the 21st century, whether you hate it or love it, it will remain for the rest of our lives. Although much of it promotes the usage of drugs and alcohol, many people seem to be very fond of it. Personally, I’m not a very big supporter of the current trends in music. Since when did it become popular to talk about having sex? Akon’s popular song “I Just Had Sex” featuring The Lonely Island explained just that, as it rose to fame. With all that has happened to Akon in the past, he picked himself back up and put him on the right track. Akon was born in St. Louis, but grew up in a country located in Northwestern Africa called Senegal. In an interview with HipHopDX, he talked about the early stages in his life in Senegal. Growing up, he had no electricity, clean running water, and many other basic necessities of life. He would be playing futbol shirtless in the blazing heat without any shoes, just living life. Then, once he moved back to the United States, he realized what electricity was and how much of an impact it had in his life. There are still people without electricity, clean water, and the entire continent is still undeveloped. There are more than 600 million Africans without access to electricity, and there are 4 million Africans who die each year from inhaling toxic fuels or house fires caused trying to heat up their homes. Therefore, he made it his goal to where the people in Africa could experience electricity. With a goal of providing electricity to all of Africa, Akon started a charity group called “Lighting Africa.” The charity group was started in 2014 alongside with co-founder Samba Bathily who is the CEO of a major solar company “Solektra International.” Since the project was started in 2014, there has been: 100,000 street lamps, 1,200 microgrids, 102,000 solar domestic kits, and 5,500 jobs created throughout 15 countries. All in all, I think pop artists are generally terrible role models for the youth to look up to. With the many that consume alcohol, illegal drugs, and talk about sex, the youth think it’s perfectly fine for them to partake in the same actions.
