Statement of Purpose Revision

I am prepared to undertake doctoral study at Peabody College. My academic training and professional accomplishments demonstrate this. My academic training provided me with the critical and analytical thinking skills necessary to be a successful police officer. As a patrol officer, I responded to calls for service ranging from simple assaults to homicides. Upon arriving at the call for service, my purpose was to observe the scene, speak with victims and witnesses, and obtain all relevant information. At the conclusion of my investigation, I had to evaluate the information I obtained to determine how best to interpret it.

SLI is the flagship program for California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). SLI is a nine-month program designed to enhance a supervisor's moral, ethical, and adaptive leadership. Adaptive leadership focuses on problems that police organizations have not solved using the department's current knowledge, skills, and abilities. My final project focused on how to change the culture of my agency from one that saw training as a state requirement to one that embraced learning and training as a priority. At the conclusion of the course, the course facilitator Dan Vega asked if he could use my final project as an example for his next class.

In 2017, the department promoted me to lieutenant after I completed a written essay, a graded tactical practicum, and two oral panels. As part of the management team, lieutenants are responsible for leadership, organizational development, resource allocation, budgets, statistical analysis, organizational structure, and problem-solving. My goal as a lieutenant is to excel at each of these
