Steve Almond’s “Funny is the New Deep” talks of the role that comedy has in our current society, and most certainly, it plays a huge role here. Namely, through what Almond [Aristotle?] calls the “comic impulse”, we as a people can speak of topics that would otherwise make many of uncomfortable. Almond deems the comic impulse as the most surefire way to keep heavy situations from becoming too foreboding. The comic impulse itself stems from our ability and unconscious need to defend and thus contend with the feeling of tragedy. As such, instead of rather forcing out humor, he implies that humor is something that is not consciously forced out from an author, but instead is more of a subconscious entity, coming out on its own. Almond emphasizes

Everybody watches television. Whether it is sports, news, or cartoons, everybody watches television. Television is part of the American lifestyle. One of the most popular late night television programs is Saturday Night Live, or SNL, on NBC. Saturday Night Live is every Saturday at 11:30 pm. The program started in 1975. With 39 seasons, it is still running today. The show is, “One of the longest running programs in television,” (“Saturday Night Live (SNL)”). Even today, the show always starts with its familiar catch phrase, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” The program is 93 minutes long and includes skits, musical performances from well-known as well as up and coming stars, and humorous, but informative, news updates. Saturday Night Live has revolutionized American television because of the success of the actors/actresses and comedians after their time on the show, how the show changed the viewers perception of television as being uninteresting, how the show saw struggles but continued to persevere to become successful, and because of the slight changes the show made in order to become successful, but still remained close to the original idea of the program.
I thought it was all and only about the changing of the names that Adam had given them. However, as I kept reading, I got a different message from the poem especially after I got to line 12. “The name he gave me stuck me to him.” (Donnelly lines 12-14). Which came across as him being dominating and forceful which, to me, showed a form of oppression. I believe Donnelly is showing this by not referring to him as Adam but as man. It’s about more than just Adam because it’s about man in a general sense, and they believe woman cannot hold their own thoughts and that meant that man had to make decisions for woman.

Could you picture comedy empowering women? This question would have only one kind of answer in the olden day but now that might be a whole different story. Just like how the world in politics and work environment change, I believed that the comedy world did too. However there are lots of sayings about how women aren’t funny. Those kinds of comments/statements are something men would say because they don’t want women to move into the comedy world. Women already have equal power in the political and work environment. Comedy represents feminist power.
‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ is often represented as being a comedy of manners- Wilde defines the text as ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’, which instantly raises questions on the purpose of the play itself. Dr Tracy Sanders states that “the comedy of manners is a style of comedy that reflects the life, ideals and manners of upper class society”, which undoubtedly links to the play. On the surface ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ could be classed as a sophisticated comedy of manners which disregards any sincerity, it is characterised by sarcasm, stock characters and the typical comedic resolution which is marriage. Yet in opposition to this, hidden amongst the humour are underlying principles of the play which arguably portray fundamental elements of darker humour, concerning gender, society, and marriage, which have invoked the questions of the true intention of the play. Many critics have claimed that the play is Wilde’s criticisms of society in the Victorian era and is mainly a sharp attack to convey serious social messages.
