Thesis: A high school student’s academic stress is caused by emotional and environmental causes, and it results in general unhappiness. I. Academic stress results by holding certain beliefs. A. Failure is unthinkable. B. Since time is limited and a good grade is desired, all time must be spent on schoolwork. C. Worth is measured by how well one does in school. II. Stress from school is made worse by other factors. A. Homework is lengthy and time consuming. B. Family, extra curricular and friends demand attention. C. Parents put high expectations on their children. III. The result of stress left untreated is a deteriorated quality of life. A. There is less time to relax due to the demands school places on available time. B. Relationships Anxiety is often rooted in fear, and a major high school fear is failure. Fearing failure can propel a student to take extreme measures in order to achieve an acedemic goal. This can mean sacrificing all available time and exerting all possible energy in order to acquire the desired grade. Putting personal desires on the backburner contributes to losing perspective of the things that are important in life, such as household chores and family. Like how a person defines himself by how well he does his job, a student may be tempted to define himself according to his grades. Fearing bad grades only worsens a person’s fear of failure. A high school student might communicate his internal struggles if he felt that outside forces were not the cause of his As a high school student, it is hard to convey to a parent that maintaining an A in difficult classes at school is burdensome. The student might be thought to be extremely dedicated to school but actually be in need of help. Striving for academics is generally thought of as great thing, but it is only so if it is done for the right reasons. Parents should communicate that succeeding in school does not mean giving an arm and a leg for perfect grades. Stressed students should free themselves from the fears they have had about school and designate time to take part in enjoyable activities every so often. Maintaining a bright outlook on life is worth all of the trouble of solving the problems that cause
