The Islamic religion is based on the Five Pillars which characterize the fundamental distinctiveness of practicing Muslims throughout the world, faith, ideas, and works link a global community of adherents into a fellowship of shared purpose. These mainstays represent the five compulsions that respectively each Muslim must complete for living an ethical and responsible life according to Islam. Muslim belief is bolstered by The Five Pillars and includes the Shahadah (profession of faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat, Sawm (fasting) and Hajj (Mecca pilgrimage). These pillars are critical because without them the religious structure of Islam cannot exist.
Shahadah represents a profession of conviction and the key column of Islam. Muslims proclaim allegiance openly to the indivisibility of God by reciting the creed, "There is no God but God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God." A Muslim is obligated to make this mandatory statement out loud, publicly, and with openness, knowing wholly what the implications. The Islamic faith centers its belief on individuals sharing a direct connection or affiliation with God.
