Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and is often termed as “the giant of Africa.” The inception of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as the greatest achievement of human evolution is gaining grounds in all areas of life and Nigeria is exploring the benefits of ICT in various ways. Information and communication in Nigeria dates as far back as the 1905's with a focus on print and electronic media (Idowu et al 2). ICT is a progressing system of development that has a major role to play in developing countries in Africa most especially Nigeria. Although it poses as a threat to the economy and the development of the nation, it provides itself with more advantages. ICT which is the keystone of development is important in developing countries, therefore Nigeria as a developing country stands to gain more from it than it has to lose. Internet, telecommunication and multimedia (Televisions) are the major area of ICT development in Nigeria.
Internet is the most outstanding information and communication technologies that exist because it connects individual users to a virtual shared network which information such as videos, music and news can be accessed free irrespective of one's location. According to Langmia et al, “In relation to the freedom internet provides, it has been both a help and hindrance”(256). Before the inception of the internet long distance communication with telephones and post offices were expensive, unreliable, stressful and time consuming such as sending an urgent mail (letter) from Yola to Lagos through post office. The best case scenario for the mail to reach its destination is five days to a week because of transportation and delivery. The introduction of electronic mail service (e-mail), wh...

Modern day Benin is located along the Western coast of Africa. Benin is only 112,622 square kilometers, making it one of Africa’s smallest countries. Benin today however, differs significantly from the kingdom that it was during the pre-colonial and colonial periods. The people, culture, and government have all changed due to colonization. Uganda, formally known as the Republic of Uganda, is a poverty stricken country plagued with economic instabilities. Since the 1980’s, the economy has remained on a fairly steady climb, but many have doubts about the continuation of growth. Uganda will never achieve a stable economy if they do not establish changes to their infrastructure. To implement these modifications and maintain economic progression, Uganda will need 1) better government determination to end corruption, 2) commitment to improve the weak educational reforms, and 3) a decrease in their export vulnerabilities. Fortunately, the country is experiencing a much needed evolution in telecommunication which could be the single most contributing factor for an improved economy.

When it comes to technology, Africa has almost everything the rest of the world does. Although we may be slightly behind, technology is fast growing on the continent. For instance, Africa is the fastest region when it comes to mobile growth. It is estimated that over 67% of the population on the continent have mobile phones, and 27% have a device that can access the internet. Simply put, 27% of the total population of Africa has mini computers at their disposal! Africa is not only thriving on mobile technology and internet, but also other forms of technology that contributed immensely to the day-to-day life on the
In 1994, ZAMNET Communication Systems was established as an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Zambia. It was the first organization that was put in place to provide the internet services in the region. ZAMNET Communication Systems was strategically located at the University of Zambia so that it can be used in providing research for the highest institution of learning and in turn it could have also benefited from the Research and Development (R&D) from the institution being the highest learning institution in Zambia. Other higher learning institutions in the region could have also benefitted from the synergistic effects of partnering together with the University o...
Uganda is a land-locked country located in East Africa, bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan and Tanzania. It is a developing country and with a population of about 36.35 million inhabitants, it is one of the fastest and most consistently growing economies in Africa. Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is the country’s regulator of the communications sector. According to World Bank’s data, the number of mobile cellular subscriptions in Uganda has been increasing gradually every year; reaching a mobile subscription of 45 (per 100 people) in 2012 from 29 in 2009. This makes 16.35 million mobile subscribers as of 2012 which is forty-five percent of Uganda’s total population. The introduction of mobile telephony has revolutionized the country’s telecommunications industry which is now considered over-crowded with a presence of eight networks in the market. MTN launched its services at Uganda in 1998 and since the recent launch of LTE network in April 2013, MTN it has become one of the leading telecoms in Uganda.
The Internet’s influence on our lives has spread throughout. According a 2009 US Census survey 74% of Americans use the internet and have access within their household.A number that has increased every year since 1990 and will sure grow in the future. In this survey they relieved that they did various activities on the internet including social media, (Facebook and Twitter) researching and reading news articles, watching YouTube videos, shopping and so much more all can be done with a computer or Internet enabled phone. With this ease of use and convenience it casts a shadow upon the future of printed and broadcast information. The Web’s instant and vast knowledge bank has changed ...
Saudi Arabia has developed rapidly in all sectors because of information and communication technology. ICT has significant impact in all sectors of economy of Saudi Arabia. It has also enabled the government to implement strategies that benefit citizens in terms of information technology that has led to high GDP and economic growth. The desert land that Saudi Arabia is known for has faded to an ICT hub. This is because of the strategic value that information technology has provided the country is insurmountable. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia exposes children to ICT at an early age through introduction of information and communication technology in schools so as to prepare them for the complex technological society that awaits them later in life.
... development, general content creation; ICT structure and access, which together lead to great costs of participation. In 1985, the landmark “Missing Link” report of Independent Commission for global Telecommunications Development not required that by year 2000 every village on earth should have access to basic telephone (CLKNET). Approximately two decades later, despite repeated and subtlety efforts by business, civil society, international organization and governments aimed at bridging the digital divide, this simple goal remains subtle. While unexpected market speed in the use of mobile devices and the internet have driven the explosion of global ICT diffusion during this period, the growing and multi-dimension environment of the digital divide has stalled moves to effectively express the severity of the difficult in the ICT for Development policies and programs.
Throughout history, developments in technology and communications have gone hand-in-hand in society’s advancement. However, the most significant impact of technology is in the communication department, because the spread internet has made sending emails, chatting, paying bills and finding a date affordable and quick. People can use Facebook, Skype, Yahoo or Gmail to communicate efficiently and instantly to their friends and loved one’s for no cost at all if they choose to.
Electronic Mail, a means of communication that is growing at a very rapid rate. In this paper, I will write about introduction of e-mail, the advantage and disadvantage of e-mail, mailing lists, sending an e-mail message, sending attachments, e-mail improvement, and security features. Introduction of Electronic Mail Electronic mail (E-mail) has become popular and easy way of communication in this decade. E-mail is a method of sending and receiving document or message from one person to another. E-mail is not only replacement for postal mail and telephones, and also it is a new medium. E-mail send plain text, images, audio, spreadsheets, computer programs can attach to an e-mail message. Using the e-mail, you must have a computer on a network. The computer must require a modem and phone line. Sending and receiving e-mail needs an e-mail program. Every e-mail user requires an e-mail address. This e-mail address is similar to a postal address. E-mail address is written as username@domain, for instance, PCLEE@juno.com. The username is used for sending and receiving e-mail.
Today, society is affected by the many advances in technology. These advances affect almost every person in the world. One of the prevalent advances in technology was the invention and mass use of the Internet. Today more than ever, people around the world use the Internet to support their personal and business tasks on a daily basis. The Internet is a portal into vast amounts of information concerning almost every aspect of life including education, business, politics, entertainment, social networking, and world security. (idebate.com) Although the Internet has become a key resource in developing the world, the mass use of Internet has highlighted a major problem, privacy and the protection of individual, corporate, and even government security . The argument over whether or not the Internet should be controlled by the government has developed into a controversial issue in almost every country in the world.
The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The Internet enables communication and transmission of data between computers at different locations. The Internet is a computer application that connects tens of thousands of interconnected computer networks that include 1.7 million host computers around the world. The basis of connecting all these computers together is by the use of ordinary telephone wires. Users are then directly joined to other computer users at there own will for a small connection fee per month. The connection conveniently includes unlimited access to over a million web sites twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There are many reasons why the Internet is important these reasons include: The net adapts to damage and error, data travels at 2/3 the speed of light on copper and fiber, the internet provides the same functionality to everyone, the net is the fastest growing technology ever, the net promotes freedom of speech, the net is digital, and can correct errors. Connecting to the Internet cost the taxpayer little or nothing, since each node was independent, and had to handle its own financing and its own technical requirements.
Email (electronic mail) was one of the biggest breakthroughs in communication when the internet was commercialized. With email, it became possible to send messages and letters across the world in a matter of seconds to the recipients address. Email was used as an alternative to conventional mail or snail' mail, as the term was introduced to describe its speed. As technology improved, it became possible to attach' documents, photographs and even sound clips or songs to emails which made mail by post redundant. Emails used packet switching software whereby the email was broken down into packets' and sent via the internet to the recipient.
