What does being an American mean? Does it really make us different? Every day, millions of people enjoy the luxury of having equal rights for all. The United States of America is very unique as anybody no matter what age, race, or gender can be whatever they please. Phillip Gleason, a historian, once said. “To be or to become an American, a person did not have to be any particular national, learning languages, religious, or ethnic background. All he had to do was to commit himself to the political ideology centered on the abstract ideals of liberty, equality, and republicanism.” Everybody in America has rights that make us all equal. The American is someone who can clearly think new ideas. Being an American "is a new man, who acts upon new principles; he must therefore entertain new ideas and form new opinions, (Crevecoeur) Being a free thinker is important since we have the first amendment, Freedom of Speech. An important principle in our American constitution, this has always been an issue everywhere in the world. Outside of the US, Americans typically get stereotyped as being too loud or expressive. Our first amendment is why we're so expressive, because it has become a part of the American culture and will always be a part in our society. Having freedom is something more and more people in the world lack. “Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere,” (Franklin Roosevelt) which is the ability to do what you want, how you want it. It’s normally something that’s granted to every citizen in the United States but not the world. Freedom of liberty is important in our culture in America today. God has given us as human beings free will. Although if we make choices based on our own free will we must be willing to take the responsibility for the effects that our decisions have on ourselves, on the people around us, and on society itself. Freedom, I believe, is the way in which people live or behave without others annoying or interfering in his or her affairs. People should benefit from freedom, equality and justice. Absolute freedom is sometimes very dangerous and may destroy the basic principles of the society. A lot of people believe that freedom means doing whatever you want, whenever you want.

Hector St. John de Crèvecœur, the author of Letters from an American Farmer, an American is “one who is liberated from obligation or dependence on others, who finds the ability to make a living for himself and look out for his own interests. ”I believe an American is someone who can work hard and provide for their family, they have to value everyone and they have to have a goal they strive for, something that goes beyond their job and family. Crevecoeur and I seem to have pretty different outlooks on what an American is. Because of this, it is clear that we have different viewpoints about what makes being an American different and why we should value people in the American system.

Being a piece of the American culture is living in the land established by both political and religious creators. Most people come to the United States because of its freedom and democracy. But as people from different backgrounds, we don’t see each other as a culture of our own.
