American and its meanings. The word “American” can be interpreted in different ways, always depending on the situation that the person it is in place. In my opinion the word American refers to any region that includes the entire continent of America (or two - the north and the south) that goes from Chile to Canada. Now, if you go with the patriotic feeling of being born in the countries that understand the continent is different. Each country is distinctive and even the languages are different or the way they speak the same language. For example, Spanish is not spoken the same by a Mexican than by an Argentine, a Colombian, and a Puerto Rican. One can be proud of the history of the country where he was born, of sadness and sadness as …show more content…

America, often called land of the free, opportunity, but what truly is America has someone actually contemplated it? Well there are certain things that might define America, for example America for some people could be the land of opportunity, There are many reasons why different types of people all across the world might pursue the land of opportunity, America. That one person leaving their home land might be a parent, a parent looking to pursue a better life for their children. A better life than the one they lived. To allow their children to actually follow their dreams and hopes, to be someone in life. Where in America there is truly no limits to what one might become in life, or what one will do with the limitless opportunities.
America has always been looked at as “The New World” where people from all over come to fulfil their dreams. Their dreams may not have been exceptional, but only to have enough to survive, have a house where their children could be raised and feel free and protected. Now, according to Webster’s online dictionary Americanism is defined as a custom, trait, belief, etc., peculiar to the United States of America or its citizens, but to me it means so much more.
Around the world, being American means many different things ranging from ignorant to arrogant. However, in America we have our own ideas of what it means to be American. There are three values that make any person American: freedom, opportunity, and equality.
To be an American has a big picture that can be described in many ways. Personally, to be an American is to achieve everything; however, the person next to may have a different opinion about it. History, America has been attracting immigrants from different parts of the world to live the full freedom and opportunity. To be an American means much more than living in the United States is to be able to expand the beliefs ones have. That is why people view the American Dream. The American Dream is an idea on were a perfect freedom is given to all people no matter social group or race. Many people have a definition of their mind on what is an American Dream. American are viewed as a person who can do the unlimited things. People freedoms and discoveries
According to Dr. Isaac Berkson, the definition of Americanization is "adaptation and adjustment". He further explained his statement by saying that the concept of Americanization happens "When an immigrant has adapted and adjusted himself to the American conditions and surroundings" (Berkson, 1891). There is a gap of the understanding of Americanization between Berkson back then and the concept of Americanization now. Berkson statement somewhat implied that Americanization could only happen in the land of America, or to individuals that come and stay in a sufficient period of time to be able to get accustomed to the culture. However, nowadays, the meaning indeed has changed into something more
What is an American? According to J. Hector St. John de Crèvecœur, the author of Letters from an American Farmer, an American is “one who is liberated from obligation or dependence on others, who finds the ability to make a living for himself and look out for his own interests. ”I believe an American is someone who can work hard and provide for their family, they have to value everyone and they have to have a goal they strive for, something that goes beyond their job and family. Crevecoeur and I seem to have pretty different outlooks on what an American is. Because of this, it is clear that we have different viewpoints about what makes being an American different and why we should value people in the American system.
Webster?s Dictionary defines American as or its inhabitants. But is that all America and an American truly is? Is a person American simply because of geography? According to Identities, ?America is a confluence of cultures.? Americans are people whose lives depict men and women who are trying to be as successful and robust as possible, this quest is symbolic to citizens of many other countries. This is why America illustrates the Statue of Liberty, a structure that symbolizes freedom throughout the world. America is composed not only of these peoples, but the cultures and the ways of life of these people.
Being an American is more than just living in America, or being born in this country. Many people talk about being American’s and they aren't even in this country. Being an American is a way of life that people adapt into by seeing how we act. People all over the world eat the same things that we eat, so that can't really be a way of being an American. To me, being an American is embracing our ways of life, not fighting for the other guys, and loving our anthem and the flag.
If these things do not encompass everything being American means what does? Being American means one has pride in his/her country; not to the extent that one views the United States (U.S.) as superior to another country, but rather he/she believes the
The concept of identity is central to the conception of self. National identity is something that became increasingly important as the world became more integrated, as the various cultures of the world began to interact. The culture of the individual is thereby a concept that is constructed both internally and externally through interactions with one’s country and also the world around it. Herein, the concept of the American identity will be explored related to the period of 1870 to 1930. As will be demonstrated, over the course of this period, American identity became a concept that was particularly difficult to achieve for African Americans given the lingering racial tension and racism lingering from the Civil War.
Since this great country was first established many intuitive minds have tried to answer the question; "What is an American". This country is full of individuals of many backgrounds, and diversities and each person has a different opinion on this question. In my opinion, an American is someone who values freedom and equality and pursues the "American dream." Every American exercises these rights and these are great adjectives to describe our country. Each of the seven readings, and the one image I compiled help mold this broader definition into a more precise description of an American.
As America becomes more different, the question of what it means to be an American becomes a more complicated answer. Being a piece of the American culture is living in the land established by both political and religious creators. Most people come to the United States because of its freedom and democracy. But as people from different backgrounds, we don’t see each other as a culture of our own. Throughout the years we have been able to achieve some kind of harmony between different races and cultures for a steady and working society.
Working hard and making a living for yourself is one of the many ideals and beliefs that play a huge role in what it means to be an American citizen. People around the world want to migrate to America because, the idea that you are free to strive and work to become successful without a strict government like in other places around the world such as, China and Russia where the government has very strict laws and rule. With the reason being able to come to America and having success or a new life is very appealing to people currently living in an oppressed place congress has placed certain requirements to become a citizen called naturalization. Naturalization has been defined by the Supreme Court as “the act of adopting a foreigner,
...ciety void of cultural biases; and allows the freedom of thought to drive the society to a higher level of conscienceness. Being an American means all prejudices are melted away by the variety of people living together in a new race of man called Americans.
What makes a person an american? What is an American? Is it someone who votes for the president? Is it someone who takes a stand in what they believe in? People have very different views on what makes an American. It could be the people that fight for our safety. It could be the people that help make a home safe. It may even be a person who fights for themselves. What makes a person an American is not living in the united states. There are plenty of people that have migrated to America, and have the same believes as any U.S citizen. Each person in this hectic world have their own views politically, socially, and emotionally, but that doesn’t make someone an American. What I have seen in my life what makes a person an American, are these three qualities, integrity, gratitude, and power.
