What Does it Mean to be Literate in the 21st Century?

2097 Words5 Pages

I assumed, before entering this class, that literacy was not just the text on a page. I assumed that literacy was something bigger than just reading words. I even assumed that I never had to question what literacy meant nor what it means to be a literate person. Because I never questioned, I never thought about my answers. “Not just the text on the page.” You cannot define something by saying what it is not. That would be like trying to define a duck as: it’s not a pigeon. Leaving one to once again ask, “Then what is it?” Also, what does it mean to be, “Something bigger than just reading words”? Thinking back now, I never even tried to explain what that “something” might be. I was secure in my knowledge that the “something” was there and it could safely be taught to children.

Though my assumptions may have been a bit naïve, I don’t think that they were too far away from the assumptions of other educators. I recently watched a video, “What Does it Mean to be Literate in the 21st Century?” In this video educators are asked, “What is literacy?” Most of them answer with vague ideas that there is more to it than just texts and books (bibliosmartgirl). Like me, they don’t go into what the “more” is. A few weeks ago I asked a couple of colleagues and a couple of people whom I consider to be extremely literate what they thought literacy means. With the utmost confidence they all gave me a very short answer that rested firmly on how well someone reads and writes. Again, like me, they didn’t expand their answers because it was assumed that the “something” or the “more” is imbedded in the simple answer. But is it really?

When we were asked, “What is literacy?” I wrote a couple of vague examples, I realized then that I hadn’t thought...

... literacy.
