What does the food pantry do to help their community? The local food pantry helps people who are having a financial crisis. They may have lost their job, had a medical emergency or their car may have broken down. The food pantry helps the people who are needy or who are poor and need some help getting food. People that go hungry for a long period of time will change as a person completely. More than seventy percent of people go hungry in the world. Going hungry for a certain period of time damages your mental health and physical health. When it dames your mental health it causes you to have negative thoughts about things. Going hungry also changes your physical health, it causes you to lose weight and it will mess up your respiratory system.
Where does the food pantry get its food? They have four sources of where they get their food. The four sources are food drives, food rescues, food banks, and they purchase some of their own food. The food drive consists of individual donations, which are usually canned goods. The food rescue consists of charities building relationships with local businesses around their area. Some food rescues will donate five to ten times more food. Some charities will also purchase their food for their local food pantry. Kawartha Food Share distributes meals, and emergency care needs to over 7,000 people every month. The food share has continuingly been supportive to the needy for 15 years. While this is the case, the City and Country of Peterborough and its 37 member agencies served 6.5 million dollars worth of food over the years! Kawartha Food Share is 15000 sq. foot warehouse and is rented, so even being a non-profit organization, has to pay rent. This ranges from four city food banks, six housing projects, four meal programs, etc.
They provide food to over 46 million people in need through their network of 200 food banks. They also work diligently on raising awareness by partnering with high-profile celebrities to create effective public service announcements. Though they are doing an amazing job tackling the hunger issue and spreading knowledge regarding hunger in America, there are two areas that may require adjustments.

In Janet Poppendieck's “Want Amid Plenty: From Hunger To Inequality” she argues that America puts excessive focus upon hunger issues among the poor when there are many other important issues that go unnoticed. Poppendieck believes that it is time to find a way to shift the discourse from undernutrition to unfairness, from hunger to inequality. In today's society, there are many food banks, food drives, soup kitchens, etc. Food is extremely abundant in America, therefore Poppendieck's statement is proven true when she states that there is too much focus on hunger. Throughout this text, she strongly supports her claims about hunger, equality, and poverty in general.

Food insecurity does not discriminate; it reaches many segments of society (Whitney, DeBruyne, Pinna, & Rolfes, 2007). Even through closely related to poverty, not all that have food insecurities are in poverty. Often it is the working poor that are hit the hardest. The working poor are a group that despite having a job, there income is too low to meet their need or that of their family. Most of the working poor (56%) live in families with children, so that the poverty of these workers affects many others as well (Problems Facing the Working Poor, Kim 1999). Food insecurity is an issue faced by millions of Americans every day, and the biggest group affected by this is working families with children. Food insecurity is so big that the United States government has now recognized it and provided a definition for it. The United States government has defined food insecurity as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov). Food banks and anti-hunger advocates agree that some of the causes of food insecurity are stagnant wages, increase in housing costs, unemployment, and inflation of the cost of food. These factors have caused food banks to see a change in the groups of people needing assistance. Doug O’Brien, director of public policy and research at Chicago-based Second Harvest says “’we’ve seen a real shift in who we serve. A decade ago, it was almost always homeless, single men and chronic substance abusers. Now we have children and working families at soup kitchens’” (Koch). These families that are feeling the effects of food insecurity will not be only ones affected by it, but all of America. Studies have shown that there is a link between food security, performance in the classroom, and obesity. If this issue is not faced head on, America will have a generation of children not fully prepared for the workforce and high health insurance rates due to obesity health issues.
Reliable access to nutritious foods is a principal concern for most individuals. Still, even in a prosperous country like the United States, a considerable number of citizens don’t consistently have this access. This problem is especially prevalent in lower-income, urban communities like those in the city of Philadelphia where food deserts, defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as areas “vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods,” are particularly common (). So what can be done to address this problem? Besides palliative measures such as food drives and other charitable endeavors, most people are ignorant of methods that can verily combat food insecurity. I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. SNAP can reduce food insecurity in a household by about five to ten percent in six months, but that five to ten percent does not make that much of a difference in the long run.
