Introduction
Many high school students are juggling keeping their grades at 4.0 or above level and some students were trying to just keep their grades to passing. When I was in high school I had one class which was keyboarding that the teacher did not have any homework. The teacher noticed that students did not have to just worry about their grades, they also had to worry about sports or even having a full time job during school. This class was competitive; however the lack of homework did not decrease from the class. This teacher had a philosophy that if you could not complete the work during class then something was not correct. Can students succeed without doing homework for classes?

At the beginning of class each Monday we were provided with our assignments for that week. The teacher provided a tutorial of what we were supposed to do and was available during class for anyone that needed help. This teacher found that not everyone typed at the same speed and some students were completed with all of the assignments in one or two classes, where other students typed slower and needed extra instructions to complete the assignments. If a student completed the assigned work and turned in their work, they students were then able to work on other assignments from different classes. This teacher realized that homework not only impacted students; however, homework also impacted others since this was in the late 90s when computers were not in every single household and it would have been impossible for some students to complete homework outside of class time. Homework is not a strategy that works for all children. Because of its possible negative effects of decreasing students ' motivation and interest, thereby indirectly impairing performance, homework should be assigned judiciously and moderately (National). In addition a 2012 study found no relationship between the amount of time spent on homework and grades, but did find a positive link between homework and performance on standardized tests (Wallace). Many people often say that students, teachers, and parents, think homework should be banned, but multiple people disagree. This heated topic has been debated for many years. Some parents and teachers think students have too much. However, some believe their students receive too little. Few schools already have banned homework, but the majority of schools don’t. Some people agree with having ten minutes multiplied by the grade level of the student. As experts continue adding additional facts about homework, it is clear that homework can help students in different ways.
Most students believe that they have too much homework and not a sufficient time to finish it on time and it’s killing them. In these two essays “Too Much Homework, Too Little Time” by user name Laxdoublek on Teenink.com and “Satire: Homework Epidemic” by Ellen Keith of Medford High School, have many similarities and differences about the topic homework. Their essays are for everyone to realize just how much homework students in school are given. Keith does a better job getting her point across to the reader than Laxdoublek.
In ‘’Down with Homework’’ with Alfie Kohn. Kohn believes that homework is a bother to kids. He believes that kids’ lives’ will be easier and less stressful if they didn’t have homework. Homework puts a lot of stress on a kid and the teachers have to remember that these kids are little and that every family is different. Assignee too much homework could result in kid not doing the homework or giving up on school. I agree with Kohn because I’ve been there and I’m observing the same problem with my sisters. The more homework they have the more they don’t want to do it. Homework does not improve student learning.
Tommy Lasorda, former manager of the Dodgers, once said, “ The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination.” Determination is what separates people from being lazy and handworkers. It not only shows laziness but also great strides for improvement in someone’s life. Determination can be seen in everyday life, whether it is from getting up early to workout, making an A on a paper, or even allotting time to do homework. Homework requires a lot of determination from students; therefore homework should stay present in schools.
Although the living conditions of children are getting lot better than when we were kids, the children study more time than we did. The pupils have to get up at earlier than 7 o 'clock to make sure they won’t be late for school. Not only have that, these pupils still had to participate in various after school program, and a lot of variety of training during the weekends. The most pressure is homework. As a summer school teacher, I always can hear kids say that the teacher gave them too much work, had to spend two hours a day to compete the homework, and have no time to play. According to Marzano and Pickering (2007) in an article titled the Case for and Against Homework, homework can be useful and very insurmountable when employed effectively. “Three import issues are the appropriate use of homework at various grade levels; the optimum amount of time students should spend on homework; and the most effective forms of parent involvement” (Pg. 76).

According to Harris Cooper, a comparison of homework with no homework shows that the average student in a class with homework assigned would score 23 percentile scores higher on tests of the knowledge assessed than students in classes with no homework assigned (4). I had thought that homework plays a significant role in enrichment and reinforcement of what was taught at school. Not only that, I thought homework also teaches personal responsibilities in preparation for the work world. Now, howerver, I question whether students benefit from homework assignments. Are these unrealistic expectations for students in resource? I do not think so. I understand that these students have other issues to deal with at home and the last thing they need to do is complete some math or English assignment.

So why does this simple 8-letter word fill us with dread? Simple, if there was ever a more disastrous invention than the American atomic bomb it was homework. Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. Homework offers multiple benefits for real life. One benefit of homework is that it helps the student develop essential skills. We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. There is no correlation whatsoever between the amount of homework given and achievement for young students, and at the high school level the correlation is weak and disappears when advanced statistical measures are used (Alphie Kohn).
