Increasing homework completion in the classroom
This project was difficult and time consuming. Since I teach Behavior Disorders, I decided I wanted to change a particular behavior of a student in my class. This student was struggling to turn in their homework and I wanted to help the student to start turning in his homework and see the positive effects on his behavior and grades.
I had to choose a subject whose behavior I could analyze and eventually change. This was probably the most difficult part of the entire action plan. Not only did I have to choose a student, but I also had to determine the undesired behavior. Once I found my subject and the undesired behavior that I wanted to change, I than had to think of what I wanted as the desired behavior.
When all the thinking and eliminating was done, I finally had a subject and a target behavior. I then started to do research on the various things that would help my subject in his target behavior. There are many articles that I found that had nothing to do with what I was looking for. I was fortunate enough to find some articles that related to my topic and were very beneficial in the upcoming months.
The next thing I had to do was research my subject. This was fairly easy for me because I had him in class for most of the school day. I knew his IQ score and how he has done on the district wide assessments the past three years. I have also talked to his parents before and have a good repo ire with them and as well as their son.

According to Marzano and Pickering (2007) in an article titled the Case for and Against Homework, homework can be useful and very insurmountable when employed effectively. “Three import issues are the appropriate use of homework at various grade levels; the optimum amount of time students should spend on homework; and the most effective forms of parent involvement” (Pg. 76).
The biggest consistency in literature what that parent involvement is a main factor in making sure homework is completed. Throughout the literature, in order for students to care whether or not he/she does homework, the parent or guardian needs to care whether it is being done or not.

What I learned from the behavior change project is that it can be extremely hard to implement a behavioral change. Even if there is a real desire to make the change there are extenuating circumstances in everyone’s life that will test their resolve to change. That makes a high prioritization of the change a must. This also means that an physician must be understanding of a patient who is having a hard time changing. Being supportive instead of judgmental is paramount. The project also taught me how to develop and implement a change plan. The change plan is the ground floor to the entire change and failing to commit the time and energy to developing a realistic and goal oriented plan is a mistake. Finally having a good experience advising a peer will help future patients giving me experience and confidence to draw on.
Everytime a kid does his homework, correctly, they are possibly advancing their knowledge and understanding of the subject at hand. When formulating a plan, it is important to remember that students do not exist in a vacuum. What is a problem behavior in one class may not be a problem in another; problem behavior from the home may never manifest in school. A key means of decreasing the frequency and intensity of problem behavior and reducing the need for more intrusive intervention procedures is enhancing a student's quality of life.

In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework.
