The View on Todays Job Market
Many factors, such as population, the industry, and the economy today affect the job market, but education is the key to success. Robert B. Reich in “U.S. Income Keeps on Rising” shares his viewpoint and categorizes jobs related to diplomas and degrees. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in “Tomorrows Jobs” provides statistical information of which jobs will increase through the year 2002 to 2014; also lists subcategories, such as government and healthcare jobs, providing information regarding how much they add to the national product. The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides information on nursing a major competitive job in today's market.
In Reich's "U.S. Income Keeps on Rising" he classifies the job market into three different categories for jobs: symbolic-analytic services, routine production services, and routine personal services. "Symbolic analytic services are defined by the manipulation of data, words, and oral and visual symbols," (Reich 105) as stated by the “U.S. Income Keeps on Rising”. Lawyers, bankers, and those working in health service account for more than 40% of America's gross national product, because of their valuable skills to companies around the world; congruently their salaries tend to be high and they represent the upper and middle class. Routine production is defined as “tasks that are repeated over and over, as one step in a sequence of steps for producing a finished product" (Reich 106). Jobs consisting in the routine production field are banking, insurance, wholesaling, retailing, health care and so on. ... articles it is clear to see that jobs requiring more critical thinking, education, and skills (such as using resources or shifting financial assets that save time and energy) dominate today's job market. As stated by Reich, "Americans will need good health care and also a good grounding in mathematics, basic science, and reading and communicating" (Reich 108). Anyone who is willing to learn and gives time and effort towards a career will certainly succeed.

In Downs and Wardle’s article, they argue and identify the flaws in teaching writing in college. Demonstrating the misconceptions that academic writing is universal, but rather specialized in each case. Citing studies and opinions from esteemed professionals, Downs & Wardle state their points and illuminate the problem in today’s many colleges.
If more people went to college, and less went the vocational route, jobs will take a momentous hit. Today, companies will not even touch an application that does not include a Bachelor’s Degree; even if the Bachelor’s Degree has nothing to do with the job being applied for. Attention is not given to whether the hopeful applicant qualifies for the job; all that matters is that the applicant has a Bachelor’s degree. Murray best sums up the American job market when he says, “Employers do not value what the student learned, just that the student has a degree” (Murray). As the title suggests, Reich's essay “Why the Rich are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer” explains the reason behind the growing discrepancy between the wealthy and the poor. To do so, he uses a metaphor of three boats in which one floating and others are sinking. But what causes one group to stay afloat, while the others drown? According to Reich, regardless of what one person's specific job is, his or her job can be simplified to fit into one of three categories: producers, in-person servers, and symbolic analysts. Depending on the category the person falls into, their job holds a specific purpose and if that purpose is no longer necessary to the U.S economy, that person, along with everyone else in that category, will drown. For the most part, his essay is still relevant to today's economy.
This disruption gives those who have lost their jobs to improve themselves by furthering their education. The psychological effects on displaced workers only last until they find a replacement job. Today, the national unemployment rate is at five percent according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Databases). Making It in America Critique In 1960, one out of every four people in America was working in manufacturing. In 2018, less than one in ten people is employed through the manufacturing industry (Heather Long CNN). What has caused the change and how does this affect average American workers?
There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. A registered nurse is a vital healthcare professional that has earned a two or four year degree and has the upper-most responsibility in providing direct patient care and staff management in a hospital or other treatment facilities (Registered Nurse (RN) Degree and Career Overview., 2009). This shortage issue is imperative because RN's affect everyone sometime in their lifetime. Nurses serve groups, families and individuals to foster health and prevent disease.
Moreover, the inflationary recession period deemed a “stagflation” was coupled with rising economic inequality as the top one percent of earners saw their income rise by 45.4 percent from 1977 to 1990. In Stud Terkel’s Working, this disparity is clear between boss and employee, as bosses such as Dave Bender feel uncomfortable in his status as a boss. Similarly, Larry Ross, ex-president of a conglomerate and consultant, describes the “lonely life of an executive”, who must now adhere to the computer and other technological phenomena that have made managing the workplace rather mechanic and demanding. The stress of cutting labor due to a new corporate model also fueled the restructuring of business to fit a profit-motivated, globalized economy. While many bosses were gaining employment, unions began to see their disunion due to the forces of automation and leaner corporate mechanisms. Most proposed remedies have emphasized the quality of the labor supply. But improving education and training, while often worthwhile and necessary, is not by itself sufficient to raise earnings. If this downward trend, which has persisted through recession and recovery alike, is to be reversed, then policymakers and educators must address the demand side as well as the supply side. Raising young adult wages will require not only better academic performance, training, apprenticeships, and school-to-work programs, but also full-employment policies, changes in the configuration of jobs and careers, and larger young adult union membership. Prior to 1973, the annual and weekly earnings of both young adults and older workers had been improving markedly. Between 1967 (the year the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking weekly earnings of wage and salary workers) and 1973, the real median weekly earnings of 16- to 24-year-olds rose by approx i mately 8 percent. Since 1973, however, the earnings of young adults have fallen almost continuously. Between 1973 and 1979, the weekly earnings of young men working full time fell by 7 percent. Young men experienced a 19 percent decline in earnings (a real value of $72 per week) between 1979 and 1989. This decline cannot be attributed solely to business cycle contractions. About half of the 19 percent decline did take place during the recessionary period of 1979-1982. But between 1982 and 1989, a period of strong overall job growth, the weekly earnings of young men fell by another $33, or 9 percent. Earnings declined still more between 1989 and 1994, dropping yet another 9 percent. The result of all this decline? A young man under 25 years of age employed full time in 1994 earned 31 percent less per week than what his same-aged counterpart earned in 1973.
The report of Robert Reich: “Why the Rich are getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer,” is an eye opener and a warning for society regarding unemployment that it will be facing and is currently facing due to a lack of technology and education. It clearly articulates that the jobs of routine producers and in-person servers have vanished totally as modern techniques have replaced them. The author has stated that the only people whose jobs are on the rise are symbol analysts. As stated in the report, symbol analysts are the real problem solvers. Their skills are highly in demand worldwide because they are the ones who first analyze the problem and then solve it. The Hart Report, on the other hand, also states the same problem of unemployment and the global recession which has left employers focusing on employees not only with specialists’ skills but also a “broader range of skills and knowledge” (page 6-7). The Hart Report clearly reflects what the needs of contemporary employers are, but the question is whether it is the universities or the students themselves who fail to cope with the requirements of the contemporary world which is filled with technological advancement and critical thinking. The more educated and diverse a society is the better society’s job market is served. This social economic separation of class has been both good and bad for society. Many workers at the lower levels of employment are both pleased and displeased with many aspects of work. Though this fact also holds true with most any job at any level, pay scale often compensates for endurance of a particular job type. The security of a person’s job also is an issue that in today’s economic times forces one to be prepared for change. This is to say that even if one’s field of expertise is needed today it may not be tomorrow. Unfortunately, there are many Americans out of work in today’s current declining economy. Unemployment can be defined as a person who is out of work involuntary, not by choice. These people are looking jobs and available to start work. Being unemployed can be disheartening and deciding what the next step is can be challenging. Underemployed can be described as being inadequately employed, such as a low-paying job that requires fewer skills than one possess. (Daly, Hobijn, and Kwok 2015) Making ends meet can be difficult for one who has been affected by this economy over the past few years. America still has a high unemployment rate since the decline of the current job market. And many Americans are struggling to establish the skills needed for employment, or the underemployed are force to lower they skill to make a profit. America’s economic status has force the underemployed and unemployed to make ends meet with the current jobs available. And last but not least some have also utilized these difficult times to venture into new discoveries to make life hassle free. So, we wonder is Americans giving up in today’s economy or do they settle for lower end job to establish a steady income to make ends.
