In the article “The Individual and the Group in Console Gaming” the authors identify several facets of group dynamics in the gaming environment. Most notably is the way in which players can compete while collaborating, and collaborate while competing. Ultimately there are three types of play identified:
Competitive: the goals of each player is directly in contradiction to the goals of other players. The goal of the game is to defeat the other opponents in some way. It is important to note that this does not necessarily mean that the players are directly affecting each other, they may be attempting to navigate a challenge the computer represents in a better manor than the other players, with the victor being identified by a score or some kind of timer.
Cooperative: the goals of each player is not necessarily contradictory to the goals of other players. In cooperative games the players may find it beneficial to aid each other, but their goals are ultimately distinct. At times collaboration will help one player more than another, and they may turn on each other at a given time. These types of games can transform into competitive at key moments, most often when the score is shown.
Collaborative: this is a newer dynamic that is appearing more and more often in gaming. In collaborative type play the goals of all players is completely aligned and the outcomes rely on the group as a whole. There is no benefit to striking out on ones own while your erstwhile allies fail, the outcome being that the entire group loses. This type of play often requires the most collaboration amongst the group and stratagems that require everyone to succeed, at times with the support of the rest of the group.

In the videogame industry there are many terms and processes. The latest term in class discussion was player agency and interaction. Now, from a general perspective the two terms seem similar but have different meanings in the field. In the following paragraphs allow me to explain what these terms mean and how they relate to the videogame industry.

Cooperation is working to get her as a team to achieve something and knowing that together you can achieve more. It is about putting aside your thought or opinions against that of others. For example, I was on the prom committee along with several others last year. We had decided to have a Masquerade prom which turned out trickery than planned. Our book defines a group as a collection of people who are perceived to bond together in a coherent unit to some degree (Baron 241). Making a decision isn’t always easy depending on how many people are in the group and if there is any conflict within the group. The basic aspects of a group include roles, status, norms and cohesiveness but when viewing my soccer team I see only certain obvious aspects being present. When thinking about the process in which we, as a group have to make the decision of where to stop for food after an away game, it is obvious that many theories and/or topics can be applied. These theories or topics include evaluation apprehension, social decision schemas, authentic dissent and conflict. The four subjects listed above help explain how a group can come to a decision together.
Cooperation or collaboration is the tendency to work together for mutual benefit and is generally contrasted to competition which is working against each other for a larger share of benefits. Cooperation is not always desirable nor is compition always to be deplored. When people are cooperative regardless of how they feel or the other person behaves, they may be exploited and taken advantage of.
The team members compete for their position as they try to establish themselves in relation to other team members and the leader, who may receive challenges from team members.
Working in groups can be a very positive or very negative experience. How a group functions together determines how positive or negative that experience becomes. All go through four stages of development, forming, norming, storming, and performing.. Unfortunately for our group, many of the members experienced some of these stages together and other missed out on that opportunity of original growth. Kirst-Ashman and Hull describe these stages as a pattern of development. This allows the group members to see how they are working together but also allows observers to see what stage the group is stuck on. I had hoped for my group to develop past the first stage of development quickly, however as a whole we couldn’t seem to get over this limbo of being a forming or norming group. Our group was not the best functioning, but working together taught me the important pieces of being a group member as well as working within a group.
