Not everyone works up to his or her full potential, they underachieve. An underachiever is “ a person whose performance is significantly below what which would be predicted by educators” (Griffin). Through the psychoanalytic lens, the protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s novel Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caufield. The psychoanalytic lens is a way to observe the subconscious mind though actions, emotions, beliefs, habits and symptoms. In J.D. Salinger’s novel Catcher in the Rye, the protagonist, Holden Caulfield demonstrated signs of underachieving that result from the loss of his brother, the competition with his siblings, and his survivors guilt as viewed through the psychoanalytic lens.
Holden Caufield, the protagonist of this novel, demonstrates numerous examples of underachieving. The Journal of School Psychology states that “a student may also be considered to be underachieving based on the educators evaluation of her learning potential in relationship with the quality of work She does on class assignments” (Griffin). Holden demonstrates exactly this. In the beginning of novel, Catcher in the Rye, Holden sets out to his history teacher’s house. During his encounter with his teacher, Mr. Spencer, they discuss Holden’s final paper. Whilst looking over Holden’s’ paper, which is only one paragraph, Mr. Spencer reads the comment that Holden wrote on the bottom of the page; “Dear Mr. Spencer. That is all I know about the Egyptians. If Holden follows these measures it will be extenuating and potentially cease his underachieving.
Holden Caufield is the consummate underachiever in the novel Catcher in the Rye. Throughout the novel there are numerous examples of Holden underachieving. Through the psychoanalytic lens his underachievement can be attributed to the loss of his beloved brother Allie, the competition amongst his siblings, and his survivors guilt. The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger is a story about a young man named Holden Caulfield. In the novel, Holden first gets expelled from school, meanders around the city, and finally his parents are informed of his expulsion. For the duration of the novel the reader has a full insight into his thoughts and feelings. This leads the reader to choose whether they believe he is a misfit or if society is the problem. In the Catcher in the Rye, Holden is an immature boy. Holden’s immaturity cause him many problem throughout the book. He is physically mature but not emotionally mature. Holden was constantly wallowed in self-pity, hatred, and regrets he had no way of moving on from his past. He counted on Allie even when he was no longer there, “Allie don’t let me disappear” (Salinger). His hope would only diminish every time he would fail again or notice another flaw in the world. Even though he had several opportunities to change his life around he treated each one the same as before, and then was disgraced when he only grew more depressed. This is one of the reasons there is so much controversy surrounding this novel on whether schools should read it, as stated by this critic, “some people complained that the novel’s language was crude and obscene” (Moss and Wilson). Holden is overly pessimistic that for many there is little inspiration in the novel. Readers do not want to act like the main character for the fact they will become alienated from society as well. “The irony, of course, is that Holden himself has already been contaminated by the world he despises” (Rholetter). Holden had so many people who wanted to watch him succeed, however he failed to notice any of them. He had animosity towards others for trying to help him yet at the same time he felt the same way towards the world when he failed once again. Superficially the story of a young man getting expelled from another school, the Catcher in the Rye is, in fact, a perceptive study of one individual’s understanding of his human condition. Holden Caulfield, a teenager growing up in 1950’s, New York, has been expelled from school for poor achievement once again. In an attempt to deal with this he leaves school a few days prior to the end of term, and goes to New York to take a vacation before returning to his parents’ inevitable irritation. Told as a monologue, the book describe Holden’s thoughts and activities over these few days, during which he describes a developing nervous breakdown. This was evident by his bouts of unexplained depression, impetuous spending and generally odd, erratic behavior, prior to his eventual nervous collapse.

This information can be retrieved from memory and brought into awareness at any time.” (Nevid 469). Holden is one step closer to becoming a better changed person by speaking to his psychiatrist, and there is only way to find out if he did.
Many young people often find themselves struggling to find their own identity and place in society. This search for self worth often leaves these young people feeling lonely and isolated because they are unsure of themselves. Holden Caulfield, J.D. Teacher’s think that Holden is good in school, but his mental issue affects him academically and in addition to his inability to deal with life. Salinger begins his novel with Holden explicitly stating, “If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like…” (Salinger 1). Seeing Holden through a psychoanalytical point we can assume that his lousy childhood can be the cause of his feeling of being lost, repression, and his unstable emotions if depression and isolation. According to another psychologist that agrees to Freudian theory, Lacan states, “Human behavior is often something of puzzle, requiring concerted acts of investigation to discover root causes and multiple effects” (Hall 105).
