The Truth About Islamic Women
Does Islam respect women? “Moreover, evil omen is in three things: The horse, the woman and the house." -Muhammad. Both Muslims and non-Muslims assert that Muhammad has been misunderstood and was not so much of a misogynist as this statement suggests though according to the Qur'an "There is still a hierarchy: Women shall with justice have rights similar to those exercised against them, although men have a status above women." Considering these conflicting statements, does Islam disrespect women?
A Muslim is someone who believes in the following declaration: “There is no god but God; and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah.’ This affirmation that is known as the Shahadah means literally ‘witness’ or ‘testimony’ – is the extent of what it means to be a Muslim. Anyone can claim to be a Muslim or become a Muslim merely by saying these words.
The first part of the Shahadah, ‘There is no god but God’ states the unity of God. The other part of being a Muslim is someone who believes in one universal and omnipotent, and all-merciful God. As a basic rule, Muslims do not recognize God in human terms. (What do Muslims Believe?, Sardar, 1-2).
Islam is both a civilization and a religion, a historical truth that spans over fourteen centuries of human history and a geographical presence in a large area covering over the Asian and African continents and even parts of Europe. There are over 1.2. billion people from different cultural and racial backgrounds who are Muslim, and historically Islam has played a significant role in the development of certain aspects of other civilizations, especially Western civilizations. The Qur’an states that certain action is to be taken in the discipline of disobedient women. The Qur’an claims that disobedient women are to be admonished by men first, then the men should refuse to share their beds with the disobedient woman, then, if they continue, the men should beat them lightly. The Qur’an also states that women are the weaker sex, and so need to be protected and supported by men. The text is from the Qur’an, so there are no discussions to be had.
It is a bible. The Koran gives examples of the ways a woman needs to act in society. A woman is supposed to be there for their husband’s. A husband can marry multiple woman and the woman may not be upset. A woman may have a dowry, but it is highly favored to give a portion of it to their husband’s. A woman is not allowed to provide testimony, because she cannot be trusted. The women in this document I feel are treated unequal to the male.
Contrary to popular belief, Islam is a religion that respects the rights of women. I was raised in a devout Muslim household, and I was raised to believe that women in Islam are amazing and powerful creatures that deserve respect, and this has had a massive impact on the woman that I aspire to be.
Dating back to ancient times, the role of women has never reached true equality with men. We can trace this inequality back to as early as the great Athenian society, where life as we know it today started taking form. On the other side of the inequality, throughout the ancient history of the world, the roles and positions that women have had have improved over time. We can see this tracing time from Athens, to Sparta, the Roman Republic, it's Empire and the rise of Christianity. Although some of theses societies lived parallel in time, each one shows a difference in the way they treat women. Each one did not treat women the same, but the end result compared to the beginning is positive for women.
Judith Lorder writes in Night to His Day: The Social Construction of Gender, "talking about gender for most people is equivalent of fish talking about water" because gender is so routine that its "assumptions and presuppositions" are taken for granted and left unquestioned and unchallenged. Institutions such as religion has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years and has teachings that are outright sexist, which limits lives of women because it creates the idea that there are just two extremes and no in-between : the virgin or the whore. Men do not have to face persecution or tyranny in instutions and social systems have a patriarchal foundation. Gender inequity operates within instutions because the institutions are in the control of men who are privileged from the gender inequity. Institutions limit women 's lives by excluding women who do not conform to their expectations or follow their "rules." To give themselves to God, by doing right, such as performing the duties within the five pillars, followers are then able to show their true devotion and commitment. Therefore, a true Muslim is one who submits to God and who God will lead on to have a righteous salvation.
The first religion and its views on women that will be discussed in this essay is Islam. Islam is a religions founded in Saudi Arabia almost two thousand years ago, by the prophet Muhammad. In fact, Muhammad dedicated much attention towards women in the Koran, the holy book of Islam. Thomas W. Lippman gives an introduction to the Muslim world in the book Understanding Islam. He has traveled throughout the Islamic world as Washington Post bureau chief for the Middle East, and as a correspondent in Indochina. This gave him, in his own words, "sharp insight into the complexities of that turbulent region." However, the purpose of the book is not to produce a critical or controversial interpretation of Islamic scripture. It is instead to give the American layman an broad understanding of a religion that is highly misunderstood by many Americans. In this way he dispels many myths about "Muslim militants," and the otherwise untrue perception of Islamic violence. In this way the American reader will become more knowledgeable about an otherwise unfamiliar topic. However, the most significant element of Lippman’s book is that it presents Islam in a simple way that makes the reader feels his awareness rise after each chapter. This encourages him to continue learning about the world’s youngest major religion. Understanding Islam dispels many misconceptions about the Muslim world, and presents the subject in a way that urges his reader to further his understanding of Islam through continued study.

You might have heard at some time or the other that Islam teaches that women are "inferior" and "unequal" to men. Women are described as weak, inferior, inherently evil (it is the nature of woman to promote fitnah (mischief)), we have deficient intellectual capabilities and are spiritually lacking. Furthermore, these evaluations have been used to claim that women are unsuitable for performing certain tasks, or for functioning in some ways in society.
While people in the west think that women in Islam are oppressed, they do not know that Islam liberated women from oppression. There are many people who have opinions about the religion of Islam, but mostly about the women who follow it. Westerners have this idea that women in Islam are disrespected, mistreated and oppressed. In actuality, these allegations are incorrect. Women in Islam have rights and are not oppressed. The veil is widely misunderstood and many do not know what it represents. In many ways, men and women are equal as much as they are not; and this is in every religion.
Initially, Old Testament describes women as the corrupter of man. However, through interpreting the action of Jesus Christ, we see that he holds women in equal roles as men, to include mention of female apostles. The New Testament does not promote equality but does mention the acts of Jesus. Finally, the Qur'an places women in a subservient role allowing men to keep their under control, by any means. Interpretations of the Gods word under the disguise of organized religion are the product of the gender discrimination of the time and continue to paint women as lesser creatures in the eyes of God.
Muslim women come from the Islamic faith. Islam is a monotheistic religion where its followers (Muslims) believe there is only one true God, Allah, and honor and love the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the last prophet of the God. Just like in any other religion, Muslims, particularly women, have rights and requirements within their religion. As well as wearing hijabs, Muslim women have the right to dress however they like, choose who they would like to marry, have the right to an education, and lead an imam.
