Procopius, The Secret History (Byzantine)
1. The document Procopius, The Secret History, is about the Byzantine society. This document was wrote by Procopius a historian. It was wrote in the six century and takes place in Byzantine. He wrote this, because he was disgusted by the emperor and his wife Theodora.
2. Procopius starts this document stating that Theodora is nothing more than a prostitute. He goes on to say that she was not of class or had any dignity, because she would perform on stage almost completely nude. Procopius portrays her as someone who is ruthless and will do whatever she needs to do to accomplish her goals. Justinian would fall in love with her, but was not allowed to marry her because of his social status, because
The Koran, is a religious document. It was wrote by Muhammad. It took Muhammad 23 years to write, beginning on 22 December 609 CE. He wrote the documents in the Cave of Hira and Medina. The reason why he wrote this is because Allah had spoken to him and requested for him to write.
2. The role of a wife in the Koran is one who is below their husband’s. The husbands may take double of the family’s inheritance. I feel that there is a lot of gender equality. For example, a woman’s testimony counts as half of her husband’s, because a woman is prone to forget. The Koran has plenty of sexual passages. For example, a man may have up to four wives, a man may marry a child, and slaves woman and girls can be used as sexual property for his pleasure. Also a man may hit his wife if he feels like it and not receive any punishment for it.
3. I do feel that this document explains woman’s roles in this society. Woman were and are still treated badly for the most part. Many woman in these countries are raped and held only to produce. I do feel that some people take the words literally and some do not. Like with any religion there is going to be bad and good with the religion. I do not agree with little girls getting married, they are still children
It is a bible. The Koran gives examples of the ways a woman needs to act in society. A woman is supposed to be there for their husband’s. A husband can marry multiple woman and the woman may not be upset. A woman may have a dowry, but it is highly favored to give a portion of it to their husband’s. A woman is not allowed to provide testimony, because she cannot be trusted. The women in this document I feel are treated unequal to the male. The Koran is very strict with how a woman may be portrayed and how the woman must act. The rules are very strict. A man may hit is wife and the wife cannot do anything about it. I feel that some people take this document literally and still practice this. In the Procopius document I feel that Theodora was just living her life without rules and therefore people felt disgusted by her ways and her appearance.
I think both documents are very different, because one is about a woman who has no fear and can do as she please, but the Koran is very strict about how the woman may be portrayed. I do think they could be compared though, because Procopius would have preferred her to be more angelic and modest. The Koran is how a woman needs to be obedient and modest for her
...ople. It is heart breaking to see how few women contribute, compare to what they can contribute to the society for the moral and prosperity of the country. Islam teaches tolerance and sacrifice for both men and women because we are one under God’s eye. Women are not the only one to learn tolerance, sacrifice and serve men. It is important for people to educate themselves and find the purpose in making this world a better place for women and children. In addition, I wish to make every woman aware of their individuality that they are worthy in and of themselves and not by the men in the society.
Vol. 1 discuss Emperor Justinian, they use a completely different tone than the one Procopius uses. Edgar mentions that Emperor Justinian had some achievements and useful skills that allowed him to stay emperor of the Roman Empire. Also, Edgar talks about how hard Justinian was trying to reconstitute and improve the Roman Empire. Nevertheless, Procopius’s tone in Secret History was angry and disrespectfully toward Justinian, because he never attend for this piece of work to get publish. Hence, is why it was after his death, because if Procopius’s true thoughts were release to the public he would have been tortured and later put to
...he New Testament, large themes and important messages resonate similarly across the three faiths. The power, authority and oneness of God is undeniable and unquestionable. Similarly, those who disobey the direct commands of God and who do evil will undoubtedly face his punishment. Also, all three religious texts outline a specific hierarchy that is inherent to the believers; God is above Christ, Christ is above men, and men are above women. The roles and rights of women were limited, and not questioned. As with any ancient text, a reader must be aware of the difference in historical cultures, interpretations and biases. With these texts not all being written at the same time, cultural shifts undoubtedly occurred, but the Koran makes use of ancient Jewish and Christian Scriptures, as evidenced by the similarities between the Koran, the Tanakh and the New Testament.
Sophia. His text shows the perspective, one can assume the Byzantine court had, of Emperor Justinian at the time. Using Krautheimer’s angle to view Procopius’ writing, it is clear Procopius is from a biased frame of mind. When Procopius is talking about H. Sophia, he lends himself to praise Emperor Justinian and the gods for the talent it took to build such a structure, Ibid. He tells a story-like chronicle of the H. Sophia, not to mention he leads the reader to marvel at such feat the emperor completed.
Roman Emperor Constantine I founded the Byzantine Empire in 330 CE as a continuation of the Roman Empire in the east. The characteristics of the empire led to the modern definition of “Byzantine,” which means “strangely complicated.” This was true, as in the Byzantine Empire was very chaotic, complex, and strange at times, but it was very massive and influential worldwide. The empire heavily influenced modern religion, laws, and engineering, making it worthwhile learning about the empire. Our ideas about laws and philosophy are borrowed from those of Justinian’s code, which was the main set of laws of the empire.
Procopious specifically in the text signifies the role of women in men’s lives such as an advisor and as well as they were seen. As told before Theodora played role in Justinian rule as being an advisor, but signifies that women had as much power as the emperor even in some cases even more. As a result many decisions were a result of Theodora’s advising which reflected upon on Justinian. However, in some instances, it is shown that women were very manipulated and always getting what they desired. Procopious mention such act when his general Belisarious caught his wife,Antonina, having an intimate relation with Theodosius he didn 't do anything as far punishment. In such a weird way he accepted this because he saw that his wife was happy and didn 't want this news to surface in the public(Procpious,2).Even so he was unwilling to do so because he a strong attachment with Antonina. Which comes to another thing that Procopious touches upon and is the image that elite individuals. Belisarious although keeping this a secret surfacing to the public was still seen negatively from the people around him. This gave Belisarious a reputation of a coward and was even called by the Persian a man who does what a woman asks him to do( Procopious,6). Another thing in the culture of the Byzantine Empire was the acceptance of prostitution. Procpious reveals that most of the elites where involves with
Women in Ottoman society had extremely restricted roles has shown in documents 2, 3, 4, and 1. Document 2 is a chapter of the Qur’an with regards to women’s rights, behavior, and treatment. The Qur’an states that certain action is to be taken in the discipline of disobedient women. The Qur’an claims that disobedient women are to be admonished by men first, then the men should refuse to share their beds with the disobedient woman, then, if they continue, the men should beat them lightly. The
Theodora would also "with inviting jests and a comic flaunting of her skirts herself..,”( Line 9) tempted all the men and mostly young boys. Theodora made a name for herself by stripping off her clothes as far as the law allowed, for complete nudity was banned, “ she removed her costume and stood nude in their midst, except for a girdle about the groin.” ( Line 12) Theodora worked as a prostitute in a house of ill-repute overhauling low-status customers, that she would engage in entertaining with 10 young men or more in a single night. It was said that she “gave her youth to anyone she met, in utter abandonment.”( Line
The society in which classical myths took place, the Greco-Roman society was a very patriarchal one. By taking a careful gander at female characters in Greco-Roman mythology one can see that the roles women played differ greatly from the roles they play today. The light that is cast upon females in classical myths shows us the views that society had about women at the time. In classical mythology women almost always play a certain type of character, that is to say the usual type of role that was always traditionally played by women in the past, the role of the domestic housewife who is in need of a man’s protection, women in myth also tended to have some unpleasant character traits such as vanity, a tendency to be deceitful, and a volatile personality. If one compares the type of roles that ladies played in the myths with the ones they play in today’s society the differences become glaringly obvious whilst the similarities seem to dwindle down. Clearly, and certainly fortunately, society’s views on women today have greatly changed.
In doc 1, which is an Islamic P.O.V document it states that women should be obedient to god and her husband. It shows how women needed to act and what they were expected to do . In addition, it says how men should treat women if she is acting hostile and they are taught to be very respectful towards them and not to be hostile back. This help build proper treatment of women In doc 2,which comes from a jewish P.O.V states how women shouldn't be allowed to say grace. It implies they aren't worthy or aren't as understanding as the males. The jewish people did the opposite of the Islamic people they thought women were inferior, by a lot.
Do you believe that the women of Islam are oppressed or do you believe that these women are treated equally? The question has arisen whether there is true equality between men and women in the Islamic community. There are many different positions and views regarding this topic. It is especially apparent more recently that women are striving and doing all that they can to have equality. “The past twenty years have been some of the darkest in women’s lives. With the anti-secularist backlash, the rise of political Islam, and efforts over the past two decades to impose religion on the people thousands have been executed - decapitated or stoned to death- and medieval laws to suppress women have been revived.” A source from http://www.famafrique.org says. This articles goes on to say that the media portrays a different image than how things really are.
For example document 4 is saying that Khomeini wants to take Iran 1400 years back, which in my opinion is odious for women because back then women have no rights at all so this shows that he doesn't want women to have any rights. Another example is that in document 5 it's saying that women are treated as people who have to obey men. A quote from this document is “Curriculum should focus largely on Islamic religious studies, Quranic Arabic and learning basic cooking, knitting and other skills, in order to prepare women for their role at the centre of the household.” What this quote is saying is that women should learn the basic curriculum in Islam but should also learn how to do household work so that they would do an adequate job at being the housewife. I don't agree with what he says because I want women and other people to do as they please and study whatever they want and if they don’t want a husband then they shouldn't have to take those classes. Finally document, 8 is saying that women should not do what men do. This document is saying that Nawwaf, a Saudi Arabian man, doesn't want to let women drive and wear clothing that reveals their bodies a lot. He said that if women would learn to drive, then next thing you know they'll start doing and going wherever they want. In these documents its showing the people about what's happening in the Middle East about women's
The first religion and its views on women that will be discussed in this essay is Islam. Islam is a religions founded in Saudi Arabia almost two thousand years ago, by the prophet Muhammad. In fact, Muhammad dedicated much attention towards women in the Koran, the holy book of Islam. However, even though much was dedicated to women in the Koran, it was not dedicated to them in the sense of equality. Women in Islamic culture were apparently much lower on the totem pole than men, "The men are made responsible for the women, since God endowed them with certain qualities, and made them the bread earners...If you experience opposition from the women, you shall first talk to them, then [you may use such negative incentives as] deserting them in bed, then you may beat them (129)." Muslim women use Koran in quest for equal rights." International Herald Tribune 17 Feb. 2009: 2. Infotrac Newsstand. Web.
Initially, Old Testament describes women as the corrupter of man. However, through interpreting the action of Jesus Christ, we see that he holds women in equal roles as men, to include mention of female apostles. The New Testament does not promote equality but does mention the acts of Jesus. Finally, the Qur'an places women in a subservient role allowing men to keep their under control, by any means. Interpretations of the Gods word under the disguise of organized religion are the product of the gender discrimination of the time and continue to paint women as lesser creatures in the eyes of God.
