The Americans occupied three main villages around the reservoir: Yudam-ni to the west, Hagaru-ri to the south and Hudong- ni to the east. Late in the evening November 27th the Chinese launched surprise attacks from the west and north that successfully cut off the Americans at the Chosin reservoir from their UN allies
